Well last night I changed the oil in the truck, every 2500 miles, with no problems as usual until I get to the filter, this time it didnt want to come off. I had been at work all day drove home in **** traffic, etc..... I swore at it for a few minutes drank a beer or two then finally got it off. Does anyone have a similar experience? I can almost always get it off by hand but not this time.

Perhaps

Is it possible you tightened this one just a little to much or forgot to put oil on the gasket? Its happened to me before. I was getting them just a little to tight. Some times I forget my own strength. :D

What kinda beer was it?

Mine do that as well from time to time. Also if there is any oil on the outside of the filter, it can be too slippery to grip. I have a $2 rubber strap wrench that gets it loose every time even though it was hand tightened when put on. I really hope your driving the bageebers outta that truck to justify oil changes every 2500 miles.

I've had this happen before here in the heat and vibration capital of the continent. The filter will sometines "work tighten" through heat and vibration. What I use is a pair of blue disposible nitrile gloves, after having wiped off the filter. If that won't work, I use the rubber strap wrench mentioned above. So far, it never failed. As you have discovered, beer will often help. It can cut the oil on the outer part of the filter can ;) and also make the job seem less bad when applied internally (to the shade tree mechanic. Hmmm. Wish I had a shade tree. )

I know a TDR member on here, aint sayin no names but he changes oil every 1500 miles or so. Yes beer helps alot, I drive grandpa style 90% of the time the rest is a little aggresive.

Its really nice when you have access to a dealership...

I remember as a kid, we just jammed a screwdriver through the filter to use as a handle :) Then in college we did that with beer cans too... except we used a can opener and "popped" the top :)

The easiest way I've found is to use a big old screwdriver. I use it like a chizel on the top rim of the filter. A few good licks from a big ball peen at an angle to unscrew it breaks it loose. Then no problem to unscrew it by hand.

Why do you guys use screwdrivers or your hands and get mad at the filter? Changing the oil filter is one of the easiest if not the easiest maintence items to get done on these engines. Just get a basic oil filter wrench and wrench it off. No mess with puncturing the oil filter to twist it off with a screwdriver, no tired or greasy hands from trying to get it off by hand and no wasting of breath on such and easy service. Using the proper tools makes life a lot easier, less stressful and makes more time for the beer drinking. Oo.

Doesnt oil changing require beer drinking? Its like a necessity. Well I guess I could reduce the greif and go straight to the wrench but then we wouldnt have this thread to post on.

I don't puncture it at all. Just drive the screwdriver against the rim. No mess, no drip. I can probably get it off before most people can get a filter wrench on it.

You guys should check out tdr member "jhardwicks "oil filter wrenches. I bought one from him and they are great. Made from billet aluminum with tdr and cummins engraved on them. very Profesional looking > I think he is still making them. He Had a pretty good thread going for a while on them.

He was also going to make a billet fuel filter cap to replace the cheesy oem one. You can do a search and find thread which has ics. of them
