I've always used delo 400 ever since my truck was new. I think of oil changes a cheap insurance, so I change it every 3000 to 3500 miles. Sometimes this can take 6 or 8 months for me to drive that many miles. Because of the long change interval, should I be using synthetic oil instead of the dyno oil here.

Thanks

If your oil is doing OK why change! I run my oil and have it tested before I change it. BLACKSTONE LAB as long as it is good to go I run it.

You should be able to easily run it 10k, 3500 is much too soon. i used to think that too, i dont like black oil, but it is good for much more tha 3-3500 miles.

I have always changed mine @ 5000 miles, which is about a year or so for me these days. I have sent a sample to Blackstone every 25,000 miles. The report always says the oil is still good and they suggest a 7500 mile change. I just did the lab test @ 100,000 miles, the oil was black as coal but the numbers on the report were fine.

I change my oil once per year or 8000 miles, whichever comes first. 3000 mile oil changes is what Jiffy Lube and other such places push, which is a waste of good oil. Our grand fathers used to change oil every 3000 miles, but todays engines and oils are far better than 50 years ago.

Yes, I use the dino oil.

All oil is dino oil as you call it. I think you are looking at gas motor change interval. Diesels have not had that small of a interval. My vw tdi diesel says 10k in the manual.

I usually change my truck around 5k, Synthetic oil starts out the same and gets synthetic polymers added, i know because we make it where i work, we make all oils here, its a refinery. get your oil tested before you throw away money.

Perfect explanation.

All oil is dino oil as you call it.

Its really not "dino" oil, it is a natural process created in the earth. But most people call the "old" oil (as opposed to synthetic) as "dino" oil.

Well, you made me go look in the owners manual (which I havent done in a long time. It does say oil change every 7500 miles under normal driving conditions. But for short trips and towing (which is where most of my miles are), it says every 3750 miles. (darn, I didnt notice the "or every so many months. But I dont want to run outside again, so Ill assume its every 3 months as in a car until I think to look again)

Its been said that the Syn Oils should last longer because the suspend contaminate particles better so you can run the oil longer? I dont know about you I dont change my Dino oil because it WARES OUT I change it to get the contaminants OUT OF THE MOTOR.

the filter is what gets most of the contaminants out of the oil. time does matter as oil collects moisture… 7500-10,000 miles or a year whichever is handy...

If this is the case I hope your not counting on the OEM or OEM position filter to do it. The moisture should be gone in a short while unless the truck is used as a supermarket queen.

depends on the service the truck is used for… light loads trips to haul lumber or other building materials or heavy loads over 8,000 lbs up to max trailered.
more work shorter interval, all highway longer interval, or a blend or combination of loads. . and of course the short run to town 35 miles…
anything shorter or for groceries the '83' ranger gets used. . it gets changed every 5,000 or once a year. whichever comes first. .
i use the fleet guard dual filter in the dodge. it has the full flow and a bypass filter in the same can…
the '83' ranger uses a spin on full flow and a franz bypass filter.

So what you are saying is that 6 months to a year is perfectly fine for an interval ?

Change it when you get to 5000 miles (or whatever you are comfortable with) and send a sample to Blackstone. They will give you a mileage recommendation based on the condition of the the oil from your truck..... no more guess work.

Sam

i have the blackstone sample kit handy which when i get to 7500 miles i'll pull a sample, my drain has a valve on it for taking samples… simple. .

i go to 8-10K
Every one of my test come back good*

*except the first one i did with amsoil, Blackstone was so worried they called my 2 times and emails. no amsoil anymore
