Thinking about buying a modded truck

My 1996 12 Valve CTD gets very little use any more, and it shows less than 80K miles on the odometer. I change the oil every 12 months, regardless of the mileage. I also keep up with the cooling system, transmission, transfer case and differentials.

The last oil change was 11 quarts of Costco's Kirkland 14W-40 diesel engine oil. That's a private label of Warren Distributing. I have one gallon left in stock.

I just checked my storage and discovered that I have four gallons of Delo 400 CI+ dino oil on the shelf! Their plastic bottles are in OK shape, but I probably ought to set each one in a bucket if I'm not going to use them right away. I bought several cases of CI+ oil to have on hand when the controversy over CI+ versus CJ oil began.

Looking for advice, keeping in mind that the engine isn't used heavy any more:
  • Should I use up most of the Delo 400 CI+?
  • Should I mix the Delo CI+ with a gallon of more modern Delo or Royal Purple full synthetic oil? The idea here is that maybe the synthetic will leave a better oil film between startups.
  • Should I mix the Kirkland with the Del0 CI+
  • Am I just overthinking this?
Many thanks.

As long as they are sealed and not exposed to direct sunlight, shake them up and use them. No need to mix with new.

The only reason I know of to not mix oils is if you are doing routine oil analysis and compare the additive package section.

What I did was use a gallon of Royal Purple 15W-40 full synthetic and 7 quarts of the Delo 400.

Well, the deed is done. I'll report back if the stuff in the crankcase turns into Jell-O or if anything untoward takes place.
