I just changed the oil in my truck and had a problem come up that I am concerned with. when I drained the oil only 4 qts of oil came out of the engine. I let it sit for an hr with the drain plug out and that is all that came out. after that I added the 11 qts that the engine calls for. now I have oil 2-3 inches over the safe on the dipstick and haev oil flowing out the exhaust when I start it. does anybody have any suggestions on where 7 qts of oil would have gotten stuck in my engine and besides draining it all again is there anything I might be able to do.

i think you had something block the opening, drain it imediatly! and see if you can move it around enough to see what it is

I asked as there were a few brands that came apart as the cummins has a higher pressure/volume than most engines. I know fram is notoriously bad for these. some have also reported headgasket material in the oil. please let us know what you find in there!

The oil didn't just get stuck somewhere. You may have something blocking the drain hole. At least drain enough to get the level back down to the full mark. Too much oil is bad, like too little.

everybody thanks for the assistance, just drained and refilled the oil, got a crap load of oil. didn't find any large chunks or anything that could have blocked the hole. The person that buys my truck from me years down the road is going to find it wierd that I changed the oil 100 miles from the last change.

strain waste oil through a piece of cloth and check for debris you dont want that "thing" to reappear on the oil pick up!

What brand of filter do you use?

OK, Don't take this the wrong way, but sometimes S--T happens. 4 Qts. sounds like the Trans. pan.

Use logic, if 4 qts. came out, why put 11 Qts. in?

Check before you drain

I've never thought about it before, but just out of habit I always pull the dipstick to check oil before I drain.

Up to now I nover had a good reason to do that but now I see it!
