Mike mentioned the plastic oil filter housing before. Now that's just stupidity. Ok. I can see a heavy plastic cap on a metallic housing, but all plastic?
I've been told from a friend known to have his facts straight, that GM has been putting together study groups to see an assembly's strong points, and to investigate where savings can be made. I bet that housing was intended to be aluminum at one time. I also blame the new age of CAD. IMHO- just cause it's proven on a computer CAD program don't mean it's proven in real life. I dunno. I see some designs and just shake my head.

You're right, Wayne, at one time, engineers were tasked to make things work better and last longer, but now it seems mostly, "How much cost can we take out of this and still make it through warranty?". I have a good friend who is a retired Jeep engineer. The suits call it " Material Cost Management", or MCM, and the old-school engineers call it MCM=Make Customers Mad.

Well, I'm sure they have their share of problems, but I think there is a serious case of Not-Invented-Here Syndrome at play, and/or guinea/WOP stereotyping. Have they built some crap? You bet, but so has everybody. A friend of mine was told by a local dealer that EcoDiesels are blowing up at an amazing rate, bad cylinder heads, etc., etc., etc., yet there are not many problems reported here by owners.

Eco diesels are doing very well here with nearly zero complaints......and I've talked to several owners and all seem to be very happy, even after a winter of use.

The Darts that are failing engines are failing due to "oiling issues". This is what has been passed to me by the service department. I take this with a grain of salt because they said the same isn't about 5.7 hemis way back and that turned out to be frozen pcv systems and the engines were blowing the oil out. Improper winterization was the root cause. Some engines are tougher than others and can be cold started and some engines really benefit from a winter front.

We certainly have unique ways of killing off engines up here. :-laf

My wife's 2010 used oil at one qt per 900 miles of highway driving. It used no oil when driving in town.........I suspect MDS was at play.
