Hi Guys, i have a 2021 ram 2500 with 6.7 diesel and am looking for suggestions on installing the oil filter. It is easy enough to remove but a problem getting the new one up in place and started on threads, seems like it has to be done one handed, any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

it has to be done one handed by feel.

Fixed it for you.

X2 on tools from Genos with the filter plug stopping the "mess" from the filter.

You can go in through the top by removing the intake tube, but, this risks getting dirt in the intake.

As we are quality control you might check the threads on the oil filter to make sure they are there and the proper size.

Oh, lord. Not again….

sag2, if you wait to remove the filter after letting the oil drain a couple hours or so there is no reason to use a plug as the filter drains back.

If you are going through the fender you need a way to keep the filter from spilling. Although hot oil likes to splash back out of the drain container from the drain plug so for a long time I was like "why bother?" with the tools. Truck would quit dripping from the oil filter area after a few days. At least my 2018 has a funnel under the oil filter so the oil goes mostly in one place. The top side oil filter removal also allows inspection of intake boots for rubbing through.

I use a 1 gallon Ziplock bag once I loosen up the filter, Then it will typically fall into bag, I zip it up and have not had a mess
yet. Guess I am a bit lucky with it? I believe I saw that tip in a Youtube Video or here on this forum.
Forgot the rest, yes, for me a left one handed feel to intall over the tire and thru the Plastic lips.
Some times it does take a bit to get it to start threading.

Yeah... Not worth the trouble as it's just as messy or worse than nothing at all. At least nothing at all is a controlled filter dump in the OEM funnel to the drain bucket. PIA to zip bag up, it's too tight to get the filter out as it scrapes holes in the bag, or "POP!" blows the zipped section open with oil now everywhere. Now you have a oil contaminated bag adding to environmental disposal concerns. Slick to handle the bag as the oil filter slides around in the now oiled bag...

I have some clearance issues on my 2018 through the fender with a metal line. The plug tool is cheap enough $12.95, faster, and just works as advertised.

Above is biased on I go through the fender as IMO it's a PIA on this tall pickup to go through the top. You don't need anything to go through the top except to not drop the filter and this way the ziplock maybe is actually a good idea as insurance.

Did you drop the filter? That's no fun looking at all.
