Spotted this on the AADT Newsgroup, and figured it was a good thing to pass along. Mike Simmons, a long time poster on that Ng, is a Chrysler Service Manager. I have always found his advice, knowledge, and info on Mopar vehicles to be sound and useful. Credit to Mike for getting this info out.

<Begin quote>

I just ran across a TSB from Chryco regarding premature engine failure in

Cummins diesels due to using an oil filter that contains neoprene. This TSB

applies to MY '89-'93 (AD) Ram truck and MY '94-'01 (BR/BE) Ram truck.

I am quoting the TSB as follows:

"Customer may complain of high oil consumption, gray oil smoke coming out of

the exhaust or breather tube, or mechanical knocking. Neoprene compounds

used internally in the manufacture of oil filters not recommended by

DaimlerChrysler may separate from the filter, lodge in the piston cooling

nozzle and can fail the engine. NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ENGINE DEFECT. "

"NOTE: Section 2. 7 of the truck warranty manual states 'DaimlerChrysler

Motors Corporation is not responsible for failures resulting form improper

repair or use of parts which are not genuine DaimlerChrysler Motors

Corporation/Mopar or Daimler Chrysler Motors Corporation/Mopar approved

parts. ' Damages caused by use of oil filters not approved by

DaimlerChrysler may not be covered by the new vehicle warranty.

DaimlerChrysler recommends the following oil filters. Do not use any oil

filter containing neoprene. Please share this with your customers. "

Approved filter list:

Part Number Manufacturer

05016547AC Mopar

LF3894 Fleetguard Stratopore

LF3552 Fleetguard Microglas

LF3959 Fleetguard Cellulose

3937695 Cummins Cellulose

FL896 Motorcraft Cellulose

L45335 Purolator Cellulose

PF1070 AC Delco Cellulose

Thought you Cummins owner's would want to know about this info.

I sent email to Amsoil Tech Line on this yesterday. They have not answered yet. But I've been using them since I had my 95 and no problems.

Has anyone been using the Purolator approved filter? If so any problems? I have local access to the Purolator but all of the others I will have to order. I use Purolator oil filters on my other gas vehicles and have had good luck with them but I wanted to make sure they work good for the diesel before I use them. Thanks

So I go to the shop right....

So which filter from the list will fit the 2001 ETC? I know that the Microglas ones are for 12 valves right? So can Fleetgaurd be bought from Cummins shops?

You can go to the Case-IH tractor dealer too, they have Fleetguard built filters, sometimes painted black instead of white. Several other tractor companies use the same engine, & carry filters. Stay away from Fram & Pennzoil filters.

khodges,

You might want to check with any big rig shops in the area. I get my Fleetguard filters from a Peterbilt shop.

Heres what the email I got from Darryn Wallace Amsoil Tech Services said:The AMSOIL SDF Filters do not contain neoprene. It is strange that material would ever be used in the construction of an oil filter as it is such a soft material susceptible to breaking down in harsh environments.

I neglected to ask him why the filter is not on the approved list. But I will email him back and ask.

TxDieselKid - I believe Fleetguard is part of Cummins so yes you should be able to get them at any Cummins shop.

wonder why baldwin filters aren;t on there. . we have run them of every Tractor trailer, dump truck, Excovator, dozer, loader we have ever owned and never had a single problem out of any of them.....

Isn't this old news???i. e. the Fram filter scare when DC had to back off from saying the Fram filters were inferior? :-{}
