Spotted this on the AADT Newsgroup, and figured it was a good thing to pass along. Mike Simmons, a long time poster on that Ng, is a Chrysler Service Manager. I have always found his advice, knowledge, and info on Mopar vehicles to be sound and useful. Credit to Mike for getting this info out.

I just ran across a TSB from Chryco regarding premature engine failure in
Cummins diesels due to using an oil filter that contains neoprene. This TSB
applies to MY '89-'93 (AD) Ram truck and MY '94-'01 (BR/BE) Ram truck.
I am quoting the TSB as follows:
"Customer may complain of high oil consumption, gray oil smoke coming out of
the exhaust or breather tube, or mechanical knocking. Neoprene compounds
used internally in the manufacture of oil filters not recommended by
DaimlerChrysler may separate from the filter, lodge in the piston cooling
nozzle and can fail the engine. NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ENGINE DEFECT. "
"NOTE: Section 2. 7 of the truck warranty manual states 'DaimlerChrysler
Motors Corporation is not responsible for failures resulting form improper
repair or use of parts which are not genuine DaimlerChrysler Motors
Corporation/Mopar or Daimler Chrysler Motors Corporation/Mopar approved
parts. ' Damages caused by use of oil filters not approved by
DaimlerChrysler may not be covered by the new vehicle warranty.
DaimlerChrysler recommends the following oil filters. Do not use any oil
filter containing neoprene. Please share this with your customers. "
Approved filter list:
Part Number Manufacturer
05016547AC Mopar
LF3894 Fleetguard Stratopore
LF3552 Fleetguard Microglas
LF3959 Fleetguard Cellulose
3937695 Cummins Cellulose
FL896 Motorcraft Cellulose
L45335 Purolator Cellulose
PF1070 AC Delco Cellulose
Thought you Cummins owner's would want to know about this info.
