Oil Filter Removal

I'm going to put my 2c worth. When I was installing the power cord for the block heater I removed the intake tubing from the air filter to the turbo and there was the oil filter. It looked like it could removed from the top very easy. That is the way I always changed the oil filter on my '94. Never had a problem. I only have about 1500 miles on my '04 HO now so it will be a while before I change the oil. I've always used a strap wrench and 1/2 in. drive ratchet and extension. I would like to know if anyone else has tried this method and what the results was. The intake tube is fairly easy to remove.

I have changed the oil on my 03 four times and have done it the way you have described. It works very well for me, might be because I'm used to changing my 99 that way.

I like to check the intake tube for dirt so I can see how well the air filter is working as well.

JAshcraft,

Your not the first to say that they remove the intake tube to change the oil filter.

If I didn't have to crawl under the truck to drain the oil, I'd agree.

I just throw everything under the truck and do the filter while the oil is draining.

Plastic Sucks

Like the rest of you I used the six 'n' one and it broke. Geno's covered it and refunded the money. Problem was I had to walk 4 mikes to get a filter wrench to fit. Needed the exercise. ;)

Man that oil comes out like a gusher - almost over flowed from my container. Never experienced that on my gasser.

Sure is easy to reach tings though - I do it all from the bottom. Oo.

First time, I had experienced help and we pulled the intake tube and got the filter that way. The last time, I was alone in the cold, and just did it from the bottom, without taking anything off. The regular filter wrench did it this time, since I had installed this filter. The first one to get off was a bear. Took a strap wrench and half in drive with a cheater bar. When I did it the second time, I just carefully kept it upright and it didn't spill anything. I would guess it's just as easy to do it from the bottom, since I am under there anyway, and less risk of anything getting into the turbo. You could use the ziplock bag trick there too, if you are worried about spilling it.

JHardwick: Do you have any of the oil filter wrenches available? I'm interested. I am of the feeling that it's impossible to pay too much for a good tool that you need. Please don't take that as an invitation to gouge though.

I'm interested as well if you have any left. Please advise. Thanks

klenger, I thought you got one already? I still have a handfull left, same price as day one. There will be no more after these are gone because I closed up my shop a couple of weeks ago. Kinda sad, kinda happy, not real sure how to feel. Been machining for 20 years, close to 10 of that self employed ... ... ..... need a new career before I hit 40

Manufacturing has treated me okay over the years, but the big shops are getting smaller and the small shops are getting forced out these days ... ... ..... just another trade that evolved and moved over seas :(

Who makes a really good metal wrench? The ones I have looked at seem like cheap junk. I have the plastic one from Geno's and would like to up-grade to something that I can trust.

Dean

LMAO

Dean, this is how the whole thing got started :-laf I did sell about 400 of them ... ... ... too bad it was such a limited market :( I shoulda made them to break after 3 or 4 uses :-laf

Geno's has the proper metal wrench for the fluted filters.

Guys, Geno's has been selling a stamped metal end cap wrench for some time now. It works fine. The cost is $5. 25.

Any Napa or good parts store will have one, just take a filter and match one up. Oo.

I believe this is Geno's metal wrench, I don't think they recommend plastic now: Geno's

The End Cap Filter Wrench I use is a Lisle 54780 93mm with 15 flute ends. Works great.

I was still hoping you were gonna make that ultra-cool fuel filter lid.

I got all the programming done and had about 50 blanks sawed up. The problem was, the slower I got, the more help I had to let go, which in turn actually made me busier trying to keep the customers I had left. On top of that, after RCA closed leaving a 60-70% hole in gross sales, I had to start pounding the pavement doing sales ... ... ... ... it was all for not :{

As it turns out, I've only got 4 left and I'd like to keep one. I'll send pricing to the guys who has emailed me later this evening and use the timestamp to determine who the 3 will go to. 1st come 1st serve is the only fair way I know to divvy up the last 3.

BTW, if any of you guys are pulling in a stock class using a Dana rear and NP transfer case, I still have some of these left too, they hold a 1480 joint :D

JHardwick: Sounds like you went down fighting. Hope everything works out for you. Your filter wrenches will have a special meaning to us.
