Has anyone tried one of those "pure power" oil filters. They apparently us a stainless steel mesh to filter the oil. It is also a life time filter that just needs to be flushed out by some method and then reinstalled. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Herb,

I looked that filter up - $260. That would mean you would have to drive at least 125,000 miles to break even vs Fleetguard replacements. Plus, I just don't think I'd trust it. I've never had a problem with Fleetguard and don't see a reason to change. Just my opinion. Hope you're doing well!

I use a Frantz toilet paper filter on my '02 truck - price of the unit and refills is easy on the wallet (don't bother with the TP jokes and ridicule - I've heard them all!) :p:rolleyes:

And for the critics, here's a Blackstone oil analysis after 20K miles on Delo 15/40:

-

And heres a "normal" (5K miles) mileage one:

-

If anyone comes up with a filter that will do significantly better, I'm interested! ;):D

Westminster pd got roped into to using them through payola or what ever. They lost so many engines Chrysler said no more and cut them off unless they went back to oem filters.

Hey Gary, 20,000 miles and counting is pretty impressive! Do you run regular oil or synthetic? How many miles on the engine?

Edit: I was looking through the report again and just answered my first question. :)

Yea, the price is steep. Just looking for any input if anyone has used the filter and what the results were. I use the Napa 7620XE and no problems, change oil every 5K with Valvoline Premium Blue. all is well with 122K and rebuilt, hopefully bullet proof trany now. Lost 2nd gear pulling a steep dirt road towing my newer TT. Yup, doing just fine. How's things in your neck of the woods?

Been running the Frantz filters since back in the late '50's - early '60's or so. My dad ran them on his cattle-hauling trucks - SB Chevy engines back then for both of us. Installed one on my first Dodge/Cummins, a '91, and started doing oil analysis to substantiate the claims made for the TP filters, and they totally lived up to the reputation, and no "TP in the crankcase", ever! ;)

Not to say some idiot using the wrong stuff and totally buggering up the cartridge installation COULDN'T manage to screw it up...

The guys over in "Bob is the oil guy" website all have VERY good things to say about these type filters, with lab tests like mine to back them up - I've yet to see anything similar or otherwise reasonably and commonly available that will provide better filtration, and mine did so well with the oil, that I put one over in the fuel flow as well: :)

The oil filtration is good enough, that even after 20K miles, the dipstick looked like this:

-

BUT, that was back when I was driving a good mix of freeway/around town driving, and now that we're out here in Eastern Oregon, not many miles on the truck (75K), and what there are is mostly local trips that generate too much soot even for the Frantz filter - analysis is still good, but oil gets blacker. And also, since my truck is only 2WD, it doesn't see much Winter time driving, hard to get traction in stuff like this:

I've seen filters like that for gas engines. Aka the trashcan since that's what they look like. I don't think I'd do it on an engine like our cummins. Run a good spin on and if you want, a bypass. Look at the filtration of a class 8 diesel. The current Mack MP7 has 2 oil plus a bypass the same size. Probably over a gallon capacity.

It's a decent rated filter, 22um absolute, but the cost just isn't there. The OEM rating is 35um absolute, the stratapore is 25um absolute.

The Donaldson ELF7349 is 15um absolute, and can be had for $15-17.

I personally wouldn't want to clean a filter that has had the NASTY 04. 5-07 oil in it.

The oil in my signature truck looks like that without any additiona filtration, even after 18K miles.

Think he means 04. 5-07...

Herb,

You have a PM.

Bud

Bud, I hate to ask. but what is a PM?

Go to the top right of the page and click where it says notifications and click on that. The pull down menu will show inbox. Click on that. It's kind of like e-mail. My son and I used it several times when he was in Afghanistan.

well, the cats outta the bag now, ain't it. It's some what difficult to keep up with ALL those acronyms if ya know what I mean.
