Guy told me to put a half to full quart of oil in fuel tank every fill up. Says it keeps everything lubed. Anyone do this or know any truth to this.

I wouldn't do it on a common rail, many people use 2 stroke or ATF in VP44 or mechanical injections, common rails have much finer tolerances. I use Stanadyne personally

Non-synthetic 2 stroke has proven to be a decent lube additive for ULSD. Testing showed it ranked in the top 3 of additives to prevent scoring and wear in HPCR systems. You can't use just any oil though. It needs to be non-synthetic and preferably non-detergent for best results. Synthetics and additives have a tendency to create deposits and other caustic substances under high pressures mixing with diesel. Most of us that use oil are using 2 stroke in anywhere form 200 to 600 to 1 mixtures.

Regular diesel additives like Stanadyne, Power Service, Howes, etc. , are useful to help cetane and some lube but lack the larger molecules like oil and older diesel. A mixture of 2 stroke and your favorite additive seems to be the most accepted choice. Avoid additives that contain alcohol or suspend\bind\attract water. That will damage an HPCR system quickly. Water should be filtered not combined.

Years ago we used to change the engine oil on off road equipment and once we were done we'd drop the waste oil into the 100 gal fuel tank... . no problem back than... the injectors had a nozzle you almost could put your little finger through... Today's modern engines have much closer tolerances, I use a 10 micron primary filter and a 2 micron secondary filter on my fuel system... I'd never use oil in the fuel... The TDR had a great evaluation of fuel system additives that add to the lubricity of the fuel to lubricate those very high quality parts... engine oil wasn't on it... .

Just my personal thoughts... .

I know of many people who have been running TCW3 (not synthetic) 2 stroke oil for many years with no problems. Ive been doing it for about a year (ever since I replaced my injection pump). Ya gotta remember what 2 cycle oil is designed for - mixing with fuel to add lubrication to fuel system components and cylinders upon combustion, so it certainly cant do anything but help as long as its added in moderation. My 3rd gen friends use it at around a half ounce per gallon of fuel added, I add closer to an ounce but Ive got the older 2nd gen. I truly do believe we need to add SOMETHING to our fuel as dry as the new ulsd is. There are some pretty good additives out there but you gotta read the labels closely because alot of them contain alcohols which is taking you the wrong direction. Ive never used ATF and probably wouldnt because it is not designed to be burned off like 2 cycle is and I imagine it could possibly have ill effects on injectors.

TDR published a compehensive ULSD additive lubricity test report, which you should be able to find with a search. Many of the big sellers were tested including Power Service and Stanadyne. Home remedies like 2cycle and MMO also tested. I recall that the test for MMO was worse than virgin ULSD. The lab uses something called a HFRR High Freqency Reciprocating Rig which oscillates a ball bearing on a flat plate with the DO as the medium. The area of the wear scar is measured. The hands down winner of the test was 2% blend of bio diesel. Info on Bio diesel is also available on the web and Cummins/Dodge allow up to 5%Blend, if not recommend it. I have been purchasing B100 in 5 gallon jugs for about 5 years now and mixing in 2 or 3 % blend at each fill up. If I could find a local retailer of premixed B5 I would go there but not yet available. Maybe the ULSD refiners are mixing in a proper amount of the required additive at terminals, may be not. I feel better running B2 in any case and it is sanctioned for all engine models by Cummins, incl 6. 7.
