Steven -

On two occasions I found a little oil on my pan bolts near the passenger rear of oil pan, sprayed it w/ simple green and washed away the residue. I also relocated my drip bottle after that and I've been watching, but have not noticed any more oil on the bolts.

Truck gets great mileage, has terrific power, negligable oil consumption, and nominal blow by in the drip bottle @3,750 mile intervals, no signs of oil contamination or premature discoloration.

I haven't identified where the traces originnated from as I found no loose pan bolts, leakage up top on the VC or filler cap and the oil filter assembly was dry. As best I could tell the rear main seal may have wept, but it doesn't appear to be leaking. Just wanted to share my experience thus far. Rig has 11K+ miles now, running Mineral oil and Stratapore filter.

richard , where was this leak / crack ? i have a pretty good leak on the side of my block also , think its from my blowby bottle , but it seems to be a bit more than i would expect for the amount of oil i see . how did they find the crack ?

Sorry to hear about your block. I just posted a thread about my oil leak troubles and the dealer wanting to rape my truck to replace the oil pan gasket and rear main. I had the typical leak on the bellhousing that alot of people complain about. It especially was all over the drivers side. I took the simple approach... . degreased and cleaned off all oil residue, drove the truck, found oil trail leading to one pan bolt, RETIGHTENED the bolts and no more leak!!! They wanted to pull my trans, transfer case, exhaust, etc... .

I am so glad I didnt buy their diagnosis. I would have gotten it back with twice the headaches and problems. CHECK it out for yourself before you let the monkeys touch it!!

Best of Luck!!

Might be a good idea to have them give you the serial number so you can personally call cummins & verify it is an HO BEFORE they do the swap.

Oil Leak=Cracked Block

Feb. 28, 2001 we took delivery on a Dodge Ram Quad 3500 4x4 with Cummins HO diesel and 6-speed transmission. March 12 I brought the truck to the Dodge Dealer for them to install Cruse Control. Only had 600 miles on it. Asked them to look at small oil leak. 1st they said there was no oil leak, and then they replaced the oil pan and gasket. Now they tell me that the engine block is cracked and they are going to replace it with a brand new complete engine. Has any one else had an oil leak like this? And also how do I tell if they put in HO version of the Cummins Diesel?

Richard,
Read my post bummed out. I would like to know where you saw the oil and how much was it. Mine was on the pan bolts and noticed some around front crank seal gear housing and also on the front right side of the engine. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

<font color=blue>Sorry to hear bout your block troubles #ad

Glad to see ya got to post tho, need any more help or questions just ask.

Welcome Aboard

huge, huge, bummer, the engine will have a CPL (certified parts listing) #, but i dont know what the one is for a HO. check yours and write it down before they remove it. as long as it is not a 2496(ETC CPL) then you should be ok.

again sorry to hear the news, where is it cracked so we all can check ours?

I didn't think they replaced the engine. I thought they replaced the truck when something happened this early. Maybe this is a change since DC took over the warranty. Anyway, According to Cummins you will have to take the serial number off the new engine and call them and they can tell you (SEE EDIT BELOW. Sorry). I agree that the CPL should do it because the injectors, pump, etc are different on the HO engine. Cummins said that the engines are manufactured sequentially on the same line and that an ETC could be followed by an ETH and then ETC again within three serial numbers. Their number is 1-800-343-7357. Good luck. Also, you need to make sure you are not getting a remanufactured engine.

Edit: Forget all that. Look on the engine ID plate. I just looked at mine and on the top line it will say ... ISB 245. On the bottom line it will say 245 HP @ 2700 RPM. So much for calling the tech line #ad

I went to the Dodge dealer to day and had there Master mechanic show me the crack in the block. When I had 1st seen the leak it was all the way back on the oil pan, oil was on the back bolts on the oil pan, look like a bad gasket or the rear main seal was leaking. The mechanic had seen where the oil was flowing back, driver side, from the front of the oil pan. He put dye in the oil and used a black lamp to look for the source of the oil leak but did not see anything he then repl the oil pan and gasket thinking that was the problem but several hours latter found it still was leaking then he put in another type of die in the oil and ran the engine for awhile and checked with the black lamp and seen the crack in the block.
I also got to see my new Cummins Diesel, It is complete the only things they will have to reuse will be the alternator and AC compressor and it is the HO version.
When I first got the truck the amount of oil that was leaking was very little it would have to sit overnight and oil drops would be the size of a quarter.
I hope this helps.
Richard
