a month or so ago I got an 041/2 in my shop w/ a pretty good (or bad) oil leak up front. I removed the fan & shroud etc and decided the leak was coming from the gear cover. so I removed the cover put in a new seal and re sealed the cover W/ gray rtv.
still had the oil leak. didn't help a bit. so he brought it back recently and I took it apart again. this time I determined the leak was between the gear case and block. I removed everything including the water pump so I could clean the area w/brake cleaner and air. it looked like about 4 inches of gasket was missing below and to right of water pump. so I cleaned the area as good as I could and used gray rtv on as much surface as I could . and two weeks later no leaks.
I talked to a local repair shop owner and he said he has seen two or three 3rd gen trucks leaking oil in same area. here is pics.
