I just did my first oil change at 3000k last wknd

and today on the way home it chimed once and the message

came up for oil change. I have read that it came on because my

oil is diluted with fuel. Any truth behind that I find that hard to

believe I just changed the oil.

No it is not for oil dilution. It monitors your driving and idle time, compares it to a set of parameters stored in its memory and sets the indicator. Did you reset the indicator when you change your oil, if not, reset it.

Did you reset your oil change required warning? Every time you change your oil you need to reset the ECM that will inform the EVIC display that will tell you need to change your oil.

To reset the time interval. Turn key on (do not start engine) push the accelerator pedal slowly down three times with in 10 seconds. Turn key off. The overhead display should be rest and good to go for another 3,000 miles or so.

Does anyone know for sure if the reset procedure works if the change message HAS NOT come on ?

I changed my oil before the message last time did the reset procedure and then a week later the message came up. Now I could have messed up, but I have done it before, but without the message going away it's hard to tell.

I think the owner reset procedure is manual and completely unrelated to the message the EVIC sets.

You may have made a minor mistake in doing the reset and it didn't take.

Mine has done the same thing and I don't like it. Mine typically does it on a long trip where I run a steady speed (70-75 mph) for several hours. I will stop to refuel and get the oil change message. Usually between 3500-4000 miles. Oil and filters are too expensive to change like that, especially when it is running road miles.

Those oil filters and oil will look pretty cheap compared to the $15,000 they are going to charge you for the new short block if you have an engine failure. The light is there for a very good reason, because they know the oil is getting fuel in it. You are really taking a big chance not changing it when it says. They are requiring oil change records now for any major failure.

Good point, SAG2. And I agree. I change it but it sucks because of the cost.

I have the feeling that their algorithm for changing has something to do with the number of engine starts as well as time run, fuel consumed, etc.

I don't even bother with the owners manual for record keeping. There are not enough entry spaces for the number of oil changes called for by the EVIC.

I just keep a log book and note every thing I do.

I change mine every 7500 miles. as most of my driving is highway miles. Have never had an issue and hopefully never will in 60,000 miles.

Also the number and duration of regeneration cycles, which is where most fuel dilution takes place due to the late injection event... .

I also had a short oil change interval last time. It was just over 1800 miles. Is there any possible way that could be right? All of those miles would have been spent unloaded mostly highway miles on my 30 mile round trip commute to/from work. Does time play any role at all in determining when the computer thinks its time to change it? Since the price of fuel has been up, I've been driving it a lot less. Now, I only get it out about once a week so that it doesn't sit idle in the garage.

Note, I'm sure the reset procedure succeeded since it chimes at me every time I start it up.

Because I was paranoid, I had an oil analysis done, and everything came back in the clear on that. It's just that last time I saw short intervals like this, they were soon followed by the dreaded P2262 error code and a set of injectors. I wish to not go down that path again. I'm bone stock, btw.
