have a buddy that has oil residue on the intake (cold) side of the turbo is this just the seals oning out or is it more serious???

Ask if he has an oil type air filter. I have a K&N and I bet it is possible to put too much on and suck it up in there.

oil in intake

Never seen a turbo vehicle yet that did not coat the inside of the tubing and intercooler with black oil.

This includes:

Isuzu Trooper turbo diesel

Volvo

Saab

Toyota Supra Twin turbo

In fact, some folks take their intercoolers off and clean them thoroughly each year for max performance.

Hey Daniel, the 2 times I have cleaned my K&N, I always have a little oil film on the turbine, just clean it up, and he shouldn't have a problem. If he doesn't have a K&N, you got me there, never seen it before on a stock application.

Peace,

Willie

When my turbo bearings went out there was oil on the intake side but not as much as I would have expected and the bearings were realllllll bad.

Everyone's correct about the K&N. Even a K&N right out of the box with no additional oiling will coat the turbo only after a few hundred miles of driving. Some frown on this, others disregard it completely. I've yet to hear of a K&N doing serious damage to a motor though. Rock on!

I'v got the oil too, just a little film around the inner edge of the housing, my blades and filter to turbo hose are clean & dry. I have yet to pull the turbo to intercooler boot. Fear keeps me away from that.
