whats too low on the stock gauge? during the winter mine usually stays atlest straight up and down, somtimes farther to the right. during the summer it usually stays around the left of the center line. recently its been getting REAL close to the farthest left line. not the bold line, the last of the lines on the braket. is this too low?

Sender's most likely takin' a crap. Common problem. If you are really worried, plumb in a mechanical guage. ;)

when the sender goes does work, just reads low? cause the gauges works fine, just seems to read lower than i would like it too.

wheres the sender? easy job?

Sender is right on the side of the motor just a little to the rear of the vacuum pump, under the fuel pump. You need a special socket to get it off, Napa has one for about $12 I believe.

MMeier, ill be right about 5,000 miles since the last change after this tank of fuel. i change it every 5,000, so im due in 500. Mine never gets black though. its got the deep forest green tint, with a little dark, but not diesel sut black. i run Rotella-T 15W-40. and unfortunatly i still have a Fram filter on. im going to Fleetgaurd this change.

Matt, thanks. is the socket $12? or the sensor?

The socket... the sensor as I recall was around $6. I had to replace my power steering pump within 3 weeks of buying the truck and I broke the sender taking the pump off... oh the profanities that ensued... . Its a 5 minute job to replace the sender... no biggie.

Sending Units

My personal experience ! 5 sending units in one year. NAPA, Autozone, Checker, and Car Quest. Shortest life was 3 days exactly on a new gauge. After reading on here, I took the advice and went directly to Cummins, problem solved, end of story. About $47. 00 and tool about $6 . Incidently it looks exactly like the cheap ones only it works great. I also had trouble with low readings.

RC, I have to agree. When I replaced mine it leaked oil out the second I the motor started turning. I took it back and they exchanged it for another one that I've had in there since (3 years) and no issues.
