Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil seal in vaccum pump

How do you get seal out of vaccum pump? I have a 2000 year truck. Don't have a o-ring just seal were power steering pump shaft goes. The seal is leaking oil so bad front axle and under truck is all cover with engine oil. The seal is in vaccum pump housing, but there is a steel sleeve pressed in to aluminum vaccum pump housing. The seal will go only one way and there is no room to pass seal by. Looks like you would have to press out steel sleeve from housing to get seal out to replace it. Looks like you have to get whole new pump like dealer says. Any one replace vaccum pump seal on newer truck?

My truck has 20,000 miles on it. I noticed the other day that the vacuum pump is leaking between the pump and the power steering pump. I asked the Cummins parts counter guy about it the other day when I was there. He said that the pump is not serviceable and recommends replacing the whole vacuum pump. I will probably have the Dodge people look at it as a warranty problem next time I go to the dealer. I would be interested in knowing if anyone has been able to fix the problem without replacing the pump. According to the Cummins guy, this is a fairly common problem.

Yea I got new seal but looks like there is no way to get new seal in. Can get old seal out by crushing it but can't do that to new seal, it will be junk. I went and bought a new vaccum pump from dealer list is $1,040. 00 Part # is 5019734-AA for 2000 year truck. They sold it to me for $722. 00. I figured it was a Dodge part but when i got it-it was in a Cummins box. I should have got it at Cummins. It looks like you have to get a new pump. My original pump seal only lasted 3 1/2 years I hope this one lasts longer. $722. 00 for a $4. 00 seal. See the shoulder of steel on front side. I pushed seal down so you can see shoulder were seal seats against steel shoulder. And there is no way you can go other way the drive dog is in the way. If you can press out steel round part out of aluminum housing were seal is installed then you can get new seal in from drive dog side. There is no shoulder on that side so seal can be installed.

Here is a closer pic. See steel shoulder. I pused seal down so you can see, should be up tight to shoulder. Maybe the shoulder could be machined down to seal outer diameter but with 40 psi. oil pressure I think it would blow out. Or maybe not the power steering pump might hold it in. Has any one done this?

Cummins had to get it in there in the first place... you've GOT to be able to get the old one out and the new one in. If a new pump is the only other alternative anyway, try to press out the steel sleeve. You'd be amazed at how well a rat-tail file works if the press happens to scar the housing (mechanic cover-up trick)

It looks like they put seal in steel housing first and then pressed it in alumium housing when assembiling pump. Pump is made by Wabco in England. I guess I'll try to press it out.

Heres one more. Ant't to much to 'em for $1000. 00. Gear comes with new pump. No bearings or bushings on shaft. Shaft just rides on alumunim housing.

I would like to get my hands on one of the "late model" pumps to find a way to change the seal and measure the o-ring sizes.

I have the seals and o-rings for the early pumps.

If you would consider parting with that "old" pump for awhile, I would like to work on it.

JFYI, You take a hammer and punch and tap the whole assembly apart by hitting on the Thick washer with the Big X in it. Then push in the new seal and tap the sleave back in... It,s EASY!!

Kwikkurt is right. i have repaired three of the pumps with new seals. The pump shaft that the seal rides on get polished down but mine have still worked.

These are good pictures. If you look at your first picture, turn the assembly over and use a large socket that can rest on the drive washer (X in the middle) and tap on the socket. What your close up photo shows will drop out of the assembly. The seal is then a no brainer.

Be sure to check the drive ears for any Burrs or rough edges that would cut the seal lip when you assemble them back together.

Does anyone make a rebuild kit for the vacuum pump and powersteering pump as a whole

I repaired the pump on my 2000. Cost me a few dollars. I don't remember the number on the seal. There is an o-ring and a seal. The seal was the problem.



I don't remember having any problems getting the assembly apart. I did have to wait a couple of days until the seal came in from the place I ordered it from.
