I read in another post about using cummins part # 4921511 sending unit and just wondered if anyone has used this sending unit with success. The Dodge dealer wanted $230. for their sending unit. The Cummins dealer wanted to change the sending unit out with a switch for about $20. 00 and then charge $200. 00 to re-flash the computer. If I use part #4921511, is it just a take the old one out then re-install the new one job. thanks Tom

Have been waiting on this question also. Mine went out a few months ago and the only way I noticed it, was that after an oil change the gauge would not fluctuate and held a steady 40psi no matter what speed. $230 for a sending unit. Give me a break!! No Cummins dealer within 100 miles of here so went to Kenworth were I buy most of my stuff and the price is the same.

You do not need to reflash the computer as far as I am aware...

And if you provide the local Cummins dealer your info on the data plate, they can hand you a new one and it is a matter of uncrewing one and screwing in the new one...

They probably want to reflash the computer (which Cummins could not do the last I knew??) to make it into a switch and you lose the "variabilty of the guage (it simply tells you on or off like the 3rd gens)...

My dad changed the one in his 99 and simply replaced the bad one with the new one and it never needed flashed.

Mine went bad a while ago, but I got a deal through a friend on the mopar part- Still way too expensive :{

I think I paid $28 for the one I got my dad... I got it through Cummins.

I changed the sending unit out and everything went back to normal. The only problen I had was finding a six point 1 1/16 deep socket to tighten the new sensor. I paid with shipping and tax $99. 65 for the new sending unit. This was approximately $130. 00 savings over Mopar parts. By the way the sending units is hard to find, it is under the fuel filter and it takes a 1 1/4 deep socket to remove.

2001 Cummins Oil Pressure Sender

I'm sort of happy to see that I'm not alone. My gauge was stuck up around 50 PSI with the ignition turned on and the engine running or not. With the ignition off the gauge dropped to zero. I replaced it for nearly $180. This was an after market unit with a mfg suggested retail of $360. Senders for Dodge non-diesels run between $35 and $60 . . . . At $180 I nearly choked but if I want to know my oil pressure I need the sender. I am also assuming that at $180 this baby is dead balls accurate . . . .

For those of you who have been following this thread or may be finding this on a search, I want to confirm that the oil pressure sending unit is available direct from Cummins under the part # 4921511 as mentioned in a previous post. At least in my 2001, it is a direct replacement and does not require a reflash or any adaptation to work correctly. I did this replacement last evening in my truck and it works perfectly.

Here is a photo of the packaging.

Removal of the factory unit requires a 1 1/4" deep well socket, or can be easily removed with a 1 1/4" straight wrench if the ECM is removed. The new sender is 1 1/16".

Pricing direct from Cummins for part #4921511 is currently $79. 00. The same Mopar unit from the Dodge dealer is currently listed at $217. 00.

Hope this helps.

Hmmmmmm I went and bought a oil sending unit direct for a 98. 5 P/N 4076930 and price was 10. 48 and it needed a wiring jumper p/n 3164755 for 11. 73 and it worked great... ... have to wonder what all does work and really what will not.

Remember this was a superceeded number that is why I had to buy the jumper for the ECM.

I looked at 3 different senders and the one for the Cummins has three contact pins in the connector. The others I looked at only had two. That may have something to do with the wiring jumper you needed.

will the part # 4921511 work for my three prong oil pr. unit on my 1998. 5 diesel that has gone bad. cummins wants $75. 00 for this part. but does not show it as a replcement only the cheapo $24 with jumper and reflash. thanks ED

I am not sure about the earlier models but the FSM for my 02 states that that the oil pressure gauge is nothing but a switch, anything over 8psi activates the gauge and gauge readings are ecm driven based upon engine rpm, oiltemp coolant etc. , no accuracy involved at all. on an 02 the only thing you do know is that you have 8psi or more.
seem to thinks that the switch from a "real gauge" was made with 99 year model

How do you know if you have the reflash? Not always but sometimes my oil pressure gauge will take off and go to 60 without starting the engine when the key is on (98. 5)
My truck had 135k when i bought it, so what was done before i don't know.

I decided to not bother with any of this on my 99. I plumbed a Westach oil pressure gauge into the post filter test port on top of the filter mount. It doesn't lie to me.

I replaced my sending unit with the one from Cummins part # 4921511, it was not listed as a replacement for the dodge but it worked and it does read the actual pressure. The replacement that Cummins first tried to sell me was just a switch reading the motor has oil pressure or it does not have oil pressure. I had good luck with the replacement part listed above.

Guys the part is available - I had it shipped to my door from Cummins see the following from my 7/08 thread.

JR2 - Thanks for the info. Before I saw your reply I picked up the Cummins part #4076930 "Switch, Pressure" and the part # 3164755 "Cable Electrical". After looking at it I thought "this is a switch!" And, after reading the installation instructions where it reads "A re-calibration of the ECM is required with this procedure, Bla, Bla". And in a Note below it states "If a re-calibration is not performed, a persistent Fault Code 141 will exist. "

I decided to check the part mentioned in the link you provided to see if it's still good. Bingo! Part 4088390nx checked to be good, I asked if it was superseded by another part and was told yes that's 4921511 - Bingo again. It's on it's way to me for $83. 46 + UPS +/- $10. 00.

Although the part I got (Switch & Cable) was $25. 49 + whatever the dealer charge to re-flash my ECM I feel better with a gage that's a "gage" than a gage that's an "Idiot" light. And, My ECM is fine, I've heard the horror stories others have had when taking their truck in for what should be a simple re-flash. "We don't need no stinking dingbats screwing around in the ECM".

Thanks,

Joe Mc
