Oil spec change

Stan, thank you for the clarification and your opinion that the TSB will be extended to the older trucks. We are in agreement that the change to the 5w40 will be needed.

I closely read TDR #84, pages 124-127. On 127 Cameron tells a "Junior Johnson" story. I'm thinking that Junior didn't design the EcoDiesel crankshaft and that higher oil pressures/higher viscosity are needed.

TSB plainly states, software release: "Revised oil change interval." It is anyone's guess as to the meaning of the statement.

If you are an EcoDiesel owner I would strongly encourage you to reread Issue 84, page 127 and be ready to change the oil based on , perhaps, a future release/TSB that will cover the earlier years models. Technically speaking, the memo is a factory rapid release and I have proven that I cannot interpret or quote correctly. I'll let the audience reread the memo..


If it is out of warranty, change now to 5w40.

It's not so much I was technically correct.

An algorithm is a set of instructions that leads to a predictable result. This is totally different than an intervening (interval) period of time.

Just purchased a 2014 ecodiesel and my service manager said it applies to all 3.0 ecodiesels. The dealers are happy for this as they couldn't get the other oils in bulk (drums) making their job easier. I ask about intervals of oil change? He said the on board monitor will tell me when change is at 20% of due. He said it could vary depending on driving conditions. Personally I'll use Rotella T6 full synthetic and
Change at 7500.

JJJ, for me their last algorithm was more like an odometer reading, change, predictably, was at 10k.
Will see what predictions the new programming has in store for all of us.

Was at Chrysler's TechAuthority website doing research for the TDR. Looked at the Owners Manual for my 2014 and the specifications page calls for a 5w40 synthetic that meets the CJ-4 spec.

Wow, an updateted OM already.

If you haven't already, change to the thicker viscosity oil.

Was at Chrysler's TechAuthority website doing research for the TDR. Looked at the Owners Manual for my 2014 and the specifications page calls for a 5w40 synthetic that meets the CJ-4 spec.

Yeah, I saw that last month when the 7th Edition Diesel Supplement was made available online.

Dealer in Northern California said my Eco didn't fall under the RRT (service bulliten ) for the new oil spec. It states all built on or before June 30 2016, mine was purchased in April 2016 therefore it is within the RRT. Says I have to use 5w30 euro or truck will throw check engine light. I read it as all Eco diesels up to June 30. Anyone have info on this?

The TSB is for 2016 units in dealer inventory. Contrary to what the dealer says, it will not set a CEL. Only the Hemi equipped vehicles with Multiple Displacement System (MDS) will set a code if wrong oil is used.
I would still change it to the oil specified in the TSB.

ED RAM, your dealer has Tech Authority access . Have him check out YOUR model year Owner's Manual and he will most likely see that the spec has changed.
