What is a normal/benchmark oil temperature after sustained running at 65 mph. And what is max temp showing a problem ?

It depends where your sensor is. Average temp is around 140 - 160. I think your trans light will come on around 270 which is way to hot. . the hottest I had mine was around 230 -240.

I did not mention, Engine Oil Temp is what I am looking for, not transmission..... Sorry for not being complete with my question

How fast you're going isn't very relevant, what sort of load and ambient temps are.

I have heard numbers quoted by some who have an engine oil temp gauge and have heard it's about 10-20F hotter than coolant temp. I don't know what temp it is a problem but anything above about 235F I would begin to be concerned unless you a pulling hard. I think 200-210F is about cruising temp.

I have my oil temp probe in the center port on the oil filter housing, it runs 210 on the highway at a steady 65-75, never seems to get any hotter, around town it runs a little less maybe 205.

I would have thought running a little hotter would be typical. I always thought you wanted your oil above 212, so any water would boil off. I guess I was wrong about this?

Engine Oil Temperature and Oil Cooler

Time to reopen the oil temperature issue.

Does anyone have the Cummins spec's for "normal" and "hot" engine oil?

Having the oil temperature prob at oil-filter is not the ideal place as there is prob does not have sufficient contact with the oil - the oil pan is the hottest place.

Also, cooler engine oil will stress the rest of the engine and cooling system less, extending the engine's life. Granted, this knowledge is based on gasoline engines. Can anyone provide either a counter point or supporting evidence on this topic?

I have my oil temp probe in the oil filter boss. Unloaded, on the highway, it'll stay at 210 when fully warmed up. While towing my 5er under higher throttle, it'll go to 215-ish and stay there. I'm not concerned about that temp because I run Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic.

Why do you not think the filter housing would not have enough contact? There is full presure at the ports and the housing is such that the probe is in the oil stream when installed in the port. Other vehicles I have had with factory oil temp gauges have read about the same temps, what temps would you expect to see?

Don't forget the oil filter housing is AFTER the oil cooler. So you are reading cooled oil temp at that point. The best place for the oil temp probe is in the oil pan. The best after cooler oil temp is 210 to 220. The oil temp in the pan will be 230 to 250, anything after 180 is getting hot and 310 the babit layer on the bearing is going to be toast.
