Oil Usage

Last fall i had an injector "flame out" and burned a piston. a piece broke off and went through the valves, turbo etc. Of course this was at 120,000 so no warrenty. I went to a local well known truck shop with a great reputation and they tore it down. basically they said everything looked good except the #2 piston and valves. They said the turbo was OK. They reringed the whole thing and new bearings. Also they balanced the crank(engine runs smoother than it ever did) just for good measure. I put in 6 new Dynomite diesel injectors (stock). In the time since the OH i have put 6000 miles on the truck. It has used 3 quarts of oil. I run and always have run Archer 15-40. Does this seem excessive? I talked to the shop and they asked me to go pull with it for a couple hundred miles. I already have pulled about 800 or so with a about a 8-9k load. They said that i have a one year warrenty, but the don't think there's a problem yet. It's just not broke in. I don't remember my engine using any oil new! What are your experiences?

That's obviously above the norm as far as oil usage goes, what does the shop think is normal oil consumption? If they are thinking that pulling a heavy load will help seat the #2 cylinder break in, even a new truck that isn't broken in doesnt use that much oil. I assume you have looked around for oil leaks and looked to see what color your exhaust smoke is for any indications of burning oil. I've had 4 CTD's and I don't remember ever having to add oil to the engine on any of them other than at regular oil change intervals and one of them had over 250,000 miles.

That's what i have seen also. We have several trucks with CTD and none use more than a quart in 5-6k miles. They will work with me yet, but i just want to find out what others have seen. Thanks for the reply!

How's the fuel mileage?



Is the oil you're using, Archer 15-40, a synthetic? I'd try a different brand of oil, but a dino oil.

Fuel mileage seems down also, but at little hard to tell since we're on blended #1 & #2 now. Archer 15-40 is a dino oil.
