Oil use puzzel??

We see references to oil use occasionally and some allways post that thier truck uses NO oil.

I am puzzelled;When the piston goes up, the inside of the cylinder gets covered with oil. Right? When the piston comes down, the rings scrape the oil back down, but if they scrape it all back down, wouldnt that have to mean that the top ring is scraping bare metal to bare metal?? That would not be good. If some oil is left on the cylinder wall so that that last ring is lubed, doesn't that have to result in "some" oil usage??

I have owned several vehicles since buying my first--a 1940 chev. I bought in 1950, and I have never owned one that did not use some oil.

The greatest oil use was a 1968 or 1969 M Benz. I bought in my "yuppy lawyer years". The owners manual that came with that stated that oil use would be between 2. 4 and 4. 2 quats per thousand miles, and thats about what it was. But that was one of the most expensive vehicles to maintain!!! It lived at the shop--they let me take it out now and then so something else could break!

modern engines and oil are vastly improved when it comes to oil consumption. I know several cars (gassers ) with 150,000 on them that dont use any oil between changes. If you run them long enough between changes there will be some consumption. My Diesel uses about 1/2 quart in 5000 miles, so if you compare that to a engine that is 1. 8 liter and IF the usage is comparable by displacement it wont hardly show.



Lets see what this thread stirs up, oil stuff gets em everytime.
 
Oil Usage

Mine also will show a drop off full of about a 1/2 quart (no oil usage to speak of) during the 5000K oil change interval. It will stay on full mark to around 3K an then start the drop to the 5K. What puzzles me is that the amount drop from full will show about that same amount above the full mark (like a inch above the full mark) on oil stick even after truck has set for over two days not started. Never have had to add any oil though.

The cylinder walls are honed, which leaves small grooves in the cylinder walls (looks like a crisscross pattern) for oil to get trapped in. Wear on the cylinder walls from the rings eat away at the grooves and then the oil has nowhere to go. So the cylinder walls are usually not bare of oil when the top ring comes down.

I think the oil also impregnates (can I say that here?) the cylinder walls so that even though the rings may scrape off most of the oil film on top of the walls, cylinder wear is still very low because of the oil impregnated steel.
 
:) I do my regular oil changes at 7500 miles and have as of yet to see any oil usage and i have 89500 on the clock, could different driving habits affect this?

If im not getting any oil usage should i be really Oo. or am i just getting lucky
 
Mine uses about 1 qt. in 6000 miles using 5W30 Amsoil. Some on here have experienced that the 5W30 oils tend to disappear faster then say a 15W40 oil.
 
Once I got all my leaks fixed, my 91 hasnt used any oil to speak of. I think I went 3K of the last change after replacing a badly leaking cam plug, and it was still where it was right after I topped it off.



I think part of it has to do with how the engine is broken in; if it isnt worked in the first 5-10K, the rings may not seat as well as in an engine that leaves the lot and gets hooked up to a 30ft G-N trailer or a 5'er and goes down the road. Rings not seated "ideally" may allow some oil leakage. Valve seals that are geting old can leak some, too, into the cumbustion chamber, and come out in the exhaust. Contrary to popular belief, the burning oil wont always be seen. Friend had a 89 Ford 7. 3 that used a GALLON every 50mi or so. Not a leak to be found; no blue smoke out the tailpipe, it just evaporated.

well in that case mine is making oil because the level on the dip stick does not differ from fillup til next oil change, the reason i know this is because as you all know its very very hard to stay out from under the hood, its the Cummins its addictive

For a see through hood to look good you have to pimp out the engine with a lot of neon contour lights and those little blue and purple strobes that flash. Plus, you have to mount a pop-out DVD player under the hood. And if you're going to go to that expense you may as well put on one of those big coffee can mufflers that stick way out past the rear bumper... :D
