Coming up on 1st oil change. I plan to go to syn. after 20k. What is the best conventional oil? Also I get confused when I read (dino) what is that?THX

dino is the same thing as conventional. Its just what we call it around here. Alot of people here run Delo 400 or Rotella T from shell. Your truck from the factory came with Valvoline Premium Blue. The stuff at your dealer in the Mopar bottles is also Valv. Prem. Blue. All 3 are good oils. Its like asking which color is the best, everyone has their favorite. I personally run Delo 400.

I'm running rotella t. The only bad thing about it is that you can smell it for a few hundred miles after an oil change.

I have run most conventionals and the best numbers always came back from the Dello!

It is an outstanding dino... The ONLY reason I have switched to Mobil 1 05w40 SUV is because of the extreme conditions faced here in the desert southwest... 120 degrees OAT towing in the mountains...

If the wear numbers for some reason come back worse than Dello, I will switch back without blinking. .

If I lived in the midwest, or more moderate climate, I would run nothing but Dello.

I have worked on CAT motors at a local diesel shop, and you can always tell when someone is running DELO 400 in there motor, cause when you pull out the cam its all covered with sludge(gross and not fun to play in). Thats the deposits that the oil leaves behind when the oil breaks down... . And thats the only oil i have ever seen do that.

personally the all the top conventional oils are good ----as far as conventional standards are concerned, all being close in wear ,flow, and depost test, delo comes out just ahead of the others. now when you are talking syn oil, i chose Amsoil, works fine for me. good luck :D

DELO is fairly popular, and is what I, and my group of "diesel buddies" use. The truth is if you use any properly rated oil and follow the scheduled service intervals, your engine will last longer than you'll ever need.

What type of Amsoil? I get confused looking at their web site. I pull 28,000 gross in the desert and the mountains and need the best protection.

Save your money

Stay with conventional, take oil samples to help you know what it is doing, then you can develop your own opinions. Synthetics are not always better. I have good reason to say this, but its too long and I don't want to go there again.

I run Delo and have a good freind who runs Rotella with Lucas Oil stabilizer. He said that they had some oil sampling done while conducting their own studies. The Rotella and Delo samples were the same. Adding Lucas helped. Therefor he runs Rotella becuase he can buy it in 5 gal pails at Walmart - 2. 5 gallon of Rotella and a . 5 gallon of Lucas makes a change and works out even. He and I both do 10K on our trucks and I have mine sampled at every oil change - no problems.

Good luck.

i use the 15w-40 amsoil 100% synthetic for my race trucks and daily driver trucks, regardless of what any ones oppinion is. . NO conventional oil will out perform amsoil fluids, or even synthetics for that matter---at least no one has ever tried to go head to head with amsoil fluids----and put it on paper!!!!

and that lucas junk!! just ask stefan at DTT why they dont use it any more, i cant remember how many people have blown motors with that stuff, but he is one of them!!!! :-laf

I don't recall anyone saying they lost an engine here because of the Lucas product, what up with that ??

Just wanted to point out that the mobil truck & SUV is no longer diesel rated for anything but an old old diesel and I would even use it in that. It is something like SM/CF rated. mobil now markets there diesel oil under another name which I do not remember and mobil Delvac 1.

Mobil truck & SUV used to be diesel compatable at CI+4/SL but like I said it's no longer marketed for diesel trucks, it has the gasoline donut stamp on it now.

There are probably some old truck & SUV bottles on the shelf with a CI+4/SL rating so look before buying.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help on the new marketed name of mobil products for diesel trucks.

Hmm, do you smoke crack?

You honestly want me to belive that MOBIL developed, certified and then sold the oil only to go OPP's my bad! The oil is NOT rated CI4.

You can take your crack smoking statement and shove it where the sun don't shine.

What you have is old information, the new truck & suv is not heavy duty diesel oil anymore. It is not CI-4/SL anymore.

Hmm, sounds like the oil is just renamed, Not not rated for diesels anymore. .

At any rate, I will have an oil analysis with Mobil 1 5w 40 oil in about 4K

We'll see then if I continue to use it.

Tow Pro:

"Just wanted to point out that the mobil truck & SUV is no longer diesel rated for anything but an old old diesel and I would even use it in that. "

That statement basically says that the current oil is no longer rated. I Raised the BS flag on that statement. I apologize if your statement didn't exactly mean what you wanted it to say.
