5th Airborne Air Ride Coupler

I would like to get some opinions from those of you who are fans of the Old School Rat Rods... if your not - this will not be up your alley.

I would like to take this look... (note the old 19. 5 wheels - not 6 lugs though)

(I would love to see this thing with a Cummins in the front... :-laf)

And incorporate it into my '97 1ton for a Rustic Looking body with Old 19. 5 wheels and put my Co. logo on it something like this... (no chopped roofs - no white walls - LOGO ONLY)

#ad

And then Put my DOT #'s and all on it with a large slashed dry brush looking professional graphic "Texas Express" along the Front Quarters and side of cab missing my Logo...

I think it could be pulled off and look authentic - I mean - I could see the TV Shows pulling it off easy. I think it could be done. I would like to incorporate some nice Solo Air Ride seats and gut the rear seat for additional room and storage. Complete with a 350hp +/- Cummins and Push button Air Ride system.

This is a secondary truck and I have a partner to split costs and time.

What do you think...

I am not a member of that site... looks like it is under construction.

The logo is a Restaurant... not sure if they are a chain or not but we have one local in Pasadena, TX.

Rat Rods are really fun and affordable ways to live the Hot Rod life without the Hot Rod investment... check em out with a Google search.

Thanks for the replies...

The rat rods are cool. I especially like the old sedan with the 20's. I had considered a 4bt for my model A rat' but it didn't fit with my $1 per lb goal. It might be a cool use for the left overs from my '60 D400/D500 rebuild project though.

I wish I had the time to build one - or even a shop to do the work in. Residential garages were not built with the custom metal worker in mind...

I say go for it.

I love RAT RODS. It' so neat to see something evolve away from the tedious repetition of, perfect paint, perfect chrome, exotic interiors, etc. It's also disapointing to think about the huge amount of time and $ spent on this, with a lot of them never even having any fluids put in them because, "it stinks and is messy. " Most are then put under a velvet car cover and hauled to the next show.

I'm a life long hot rodder / gear head, and I've lost all interest in them.

My nephew in Mena, Ark. built a 1931 Chev. cpe. rat rod. Original old body with upgraded frame and drivetrain.

I drove it last summer. That thing is blindingly fast and functional all in one.

He's not into diesels, but he is an excelent automotive welder, fabricater, mechanic, etc. If you think you might want to talk to him, PM or call me and I'll give you his name and #.

Keep us posted with your progress.

Good luck, Ray

:-lafThanks RHestand... I may PM you some time in the near future.

The CTD is first but I may start scotch clothing some paint to get a feel for the look... I would like to take it down to some paint - a lot of metal - maybe Red Prime it knock 98% off again til' shiny steel and clear coat it - then graphics.

The rims are available to me now... they look great - like they just came out of a field. :-laf

I will go with 225 or 245/70/19. 5 Tires - I wish I could put an old vessel in the back in place of a shiny fuel cell... but big brother may not think of the nastalgia like we would.

Seats will be up to me so probably low on the list but I would like to make that an eventual point. I would love to redoe the dash - but may opt for some License plate guage holders somewhere :D

Well good - I have it in my minds eye but didn't know if I could relay the vision.

A bull horn (Mmmmmrrrrrrrrr) and small Rustic Lone Star may adorn it as well in some subtle location... My DBA is Lone Star Sales (& Transportation) - hince the Lone Star - I would like to give it a name as all custom builds have  Texas Express... maybe even a Photo of Johnny Cash taped to the dash :-laf

So far my only pickle is the Fiberglass Fenders over my duals... Any suggestions would be great. Just take the paint down like everything else or pull something fancy?

Thanks for the input... actually suprised me - I got my tough skin out.

Thats cool... those almost look like Mater from Cars :-laf

I love that show... and good thing with a 3 yr old. ;)

I can understand that but Rat Rods I still don't get, seems too extreme the other way and they are so bottom of the barrel you wouldn't drive one of those either. . just too ratty. I like the ones that are drivers and they are obvious.

That is the beauty of ratrods. Very little time and money needed. Some determination required though.

Here is one of my favorites I saw in Billings NHRDA dyno day in june this year.
