Before I install RV275's to replace the stock units (which Schied told me three were bad 2=60%, 5=60%, 1-90%) would it be a good idea to look into the possibility of a bad VP44. Last week I had to replace a lift pump cause it wouldn't prime my filter cannister after a change. The new one cured that. Well, this bad idle thing, which got worse over the three weeks that I have owned this truck, was blamed on three bad injectors according to Schied. I think they must have used the high pressure line sensor tool to see pulses or something cause it didn't take long and they didn't take anything apart.
After searching archives for "injectors", I ran across a post where someone else said it was rare for an injector pump failure to cause only one injector to go bad and that most likely, more than one would be acting up if the VP was failing.
Well, here I am, with 3 failing and 3 at 100%. Schied wants $80 to replace each stock injector (installed price I hope). I want to install 275's myself and save some $$ for other things in the meantime. Either way, its not exactly pocket change here.
Should I have them "test" the VP too?? (is that even possible). I know that if I do this injector install (of they do it) and my rough running engine is not fixed, and I come to find out that my VP is bad, I am going to be very upset. Because if I install 275's, no way will anyone warrant my VP44 then. Then there goes some major $$$ again. I cant get the injectors under warranty Schied claims. Again they said Cummins would say foreign dirt ruined them and not pay for them.
Again it runs very strong with throttle applied. Its just the idle that seems rough. But maybe applied throttle is rough too and I just dont have one to compare it to. I have no reference point. This is my first Cummins Dodge.
Even if Schied does the injectors for me and later come to find the VP is bad, whos to say Cummins wont say, well the same foreign matter that made the injectors go bad also ruined the VP. I dont mind paying a couple hundred for injectors but I wont buy a VP for a couple thousand. That will be the point when this expensive truck becomes too expensive to maintain. I'll be done with 24V Cummins diesels at that point. Sometimes I wish I would have just bought a 12V.
In closing, my question is what are opinions on the fact that 3 injectors are bad at the same time versus a bad VP44?
Sorry for all the questions, but the forum archives made me do it. . hehe. Theres too much info here.
PS: truck has 79,000 miles, no towing, or work.
