Hey TDR Brothers!

I don't know if anyone has ever attemped installing aftermarket Air Conditioning on a First Generation D/C but we've just completed such a conversion with good results.

This particular truck was formerly known as "Old School's Immaculate 1992 Powerhouse" had lived it's entire life in the relatively cool enviroment of Connecticut (near the ocean) but now resides in Tennessee where the humidity is a killer. Air Conditioning was a must, if not for the new owner but for her beloved Cocker Spaniel, Brandi!

Well 3 days and $1351. 00 later this truck is putting out some cool, humidity reduced, climate controlled air conditioning. The unit went in well but uses up more of the passenger floorboard foot space than factory air. Other than that it looks OEM if you didn't have the two units side by side for comparision. It seems to put out enough cold air for a standard cab but by no means can turn the cab into a meat locker like the old R-12 freon OEM air can. It also tends to make a bit more noise doing so!

Be thankful if you have the factory air! Has anyone done the conversion to the new freon in our trucks?

Keeno

Ps: Both trucks are off the the Outer Banks of N. C. over the fourth for A/C testing and sea kayaking!

Outstanding KEENO and DEE-ZUL! That's one power accessory the motor won't mind or even care you've hung on it. Sounds like a nice road and surf trip also. Have a great time!
Does Brandi dig the seating?
Regards.

Keeno,
I did conversion on my old 86 gas truck, the new improved version never did cool as good as the original "bad" freon did. I had porous hoses that leaked and so when getting it repaired had it updated at the same time.
COOL RAMMIN TO EVERYONE ON THE 4TH!!!!

Keeno,
Last summer I had my A/C recharged in Texas with the R-12. Cost a lot more but I was told by the tech that the new stuff works well at highway speeds but not so well when sitting in traffic. Apparently the more RPMS the better which there aren't many in a diesel. I've also been told that converted systems don't cool as well as the original R-12 but if it was designed for 134-a then it works fine. But any cool is better than no cool. #ad

I converted over to R134, and it cooled just as well as R12 until my engine cooling fan hub went belly up. I replaced the fan with an electric unit, but it didn't cool the condensor well enough at adle, so it blew the popoff valve. Now I'm adding a second fan, and having a hose made with a Schrader valve for a high pressure cutout switch. That should take care of it.

Hey Gang!

A/C update: Over the 4th we headed to the Atlantic coast of North Carolina to enjoy the sun & beach at the Outer Banks. We have made a few more observations about the aftermarket air after 1500+ miles of driving.

The aftermarket system is basically a stand alone system that is not tied into the 'heat' or 'defrost' functions of the OEM system. What this means is that it's tough to modulate the air temp of the air conditioning. It's either "meat locker" cold or off! Myself and the Cocker Spaniel "Brandi" just love the cold air, she just sits there with her tounge sticking out & her ears being blown back by the cold air. The vehicle (& dog) owner thinks it's toooo cold for her taste and opens the outside vents so she doesn't have to see her breath vapor when she speaks. There really isn't much adjustment in the system but it does blow cold. I guess it looks kind of funny when you get out of a big Cummins/Dodge Ram wearing a pullover fleece when it's 90+ degrees outside!

Question: Does the new R134 have similar abilities in sheading the heat through the condenser as the old R12? The amount of coldness seems to vary after driving for a few hundred miles.

Just this long weekend past we had the opportunity to really "air on". Going to and from the "Point", and Narragansett in some hot and humid conditions for all for days.
Results: Driver turns air on, drives happily for a few miles, passenger gets "cold", cracks open ventless side window, driver drops air down one notch, passenger opens side window completely, (to warm up) driver turns down air to minimum, stops in traffic, gets warm, powers up both windows, cranks air on full, starts cycle all over again. Neat, huh?
Driver has found that it is real nice blowing cold air on his feet while wearing Reef sandals. Actually gets off on it. Passenger does not.
Learning to fine tune the air. Teaching the old dog new tricks... ... ... . Aloha.
Got swell three out of four days... .

Keeno,
I've noticed that after driving a few hours with the A/C on in humid weather that it 'seems' not to blow as cold. Not sure if it is just me or the system but it is definitely colder than the outside air. Our 96 Impala SS had the new 134a system and seemed to do the same. The system was recharged last summer with a colored dye. They couldn't find any leaks but I guess that can change.
