It looks as though I'll get another 5000 miles from the stock Michelins - I don't think that 42000+ is bad for a heavy truck that has seen quite a few towing miles. The ride has been quiet and smooth, but I'm ready for a larger more aggressive tread. I don't want to lift the front for bigger tires since it sits perfectly level on the overloads when the trailer is on the back.

From reading, I want to go with 305/70-16's on my stock 8" rims, and I was hoping that some of you could share your experience with the different brands.

I use the truck 95% on road, about 10% of that towing a 13000# fifth wheel. A little bit of off-road use in the sandy deserts, and the wee bit of rain that we get in so-cal. Any snow that we see (visit) will be handled by the wife's AWD Murano so I'm not concerned about snow or ice much.

thanks

I have 305/70-16 Nitto Terra Grapplers, only had them 3-4 weeks but I really like them. Mine did not rub at all at stock height, I did lift it just for looks. They seem to handle very well with the trailer, have not had much weight on it yet but I think they will do fine. I had Wally world mount and balance them, well apparently the bead on the tire sticks out to much for them to get the weight on. So mine are not balanced, they said they only needed 2 oz. , but they ride great as is!

Explorer Pro Comp has a buy 3 get one free special till end of March. I just bought the X-Terrains. Supposed to be quiet and wear well. VERY VERY aggressive looking tire.

We recommended to buy from:

I have the Pro Comp Xterrains on my truck. I have about 8000 mi on them and they will be toast in another 2000 miles. They are loud, too. At first, they were very quiet but have gotten quite obnoxious over time. They do look good though:D . I won't be buying another set of Xterrains when the time comes.

I've been running the Pro Comp A/Ts for about 10K miles. They are wearing slowly and make almost no noise. I will be buying them again.

55k on my nittos, probably go a couple more rounds. they still look ok. if ya were in the neighborhood, i'd let ya try'em.

throwing on some 265 michelins for a while aired up to 80 to try and sqeak some extra mpg's

like the nittos. dunno if i'd go 285x75 or 325x70 next time, no particular reason, just to be different. ;)

thanks guys, I'm leaning toward the Nitto's at this point, largely because of the load E rating which I value when I'm towing the 5'er in the hot deserts.

Seems like the best (and only) price I can find around here is $170 with lifetime balance and repair.

My BFG A/Ts have done quite well considering the abuse I have put them through. I have about 45k on them now and they are almost done for. They have seen off road and the burning out in the gravel.

I have about 2,000 miles on Cooper Discoverer A/T 305/70/16. Stock lift with rubbing at full turn only. The road noise is just as quiet as stock michelins. Its a D rated tire and they handle great off the road. New tires are about the same height as stock, but

alot wider.

i put on the nitto's. i like them a lot. the stiffer sidewalls make the turns feel more stable than with the old d rated bfg's i had. better stability while towing too. very low noise. ken
