Oreillies auto parts has a program for veterans discount. Sounds good, right ? Well I went in to buy a pair of wiper blades today and asked for the discount. They wanted to see my "military" id. So, I showed them my wash state drivers lic that shows I am a vet. That is how it is supposed to work. But, they also wanted the last 3 digits of my social security number. They cant have that. I showed them my VA hospital card and they took the last 3 digits of my member id for that.

I do feel pretty violated and probably wont go back to oreillies just because of that. It is nice that they offer a veterans discount, but it is beyond the pale to collect any part of your ssi number or va member number.

I've never had a problem with flashing my retired military ID at O'Reilly stores in Colorado or other states. I just renewed my driver's license in CO last week. I brought in my DD214 and "Veteran" with the Navy's emblem was added to the lower right. Today I shopped at Lowe's and had to register before receiving the military discount. Had to hand over my military ID along with driver's license to the customer service rep. As of when I don't recall, but only a DoD number is used vice SSN on military IDs. I'll try flashing just my driver's license next time and see if the "Veteran" gets the job done. I wouldn't quit O'Reilly over one person at one store unless others have had bad experiences. Plenty of idiots at Pepboys, Advance Auto, and Autozone. They don't hire the best at minimum wage.

Aside note, Costco has Goodyear wiper blades on sale for $5. Bought a pair today for my Civic. Good quality blades IMO. Sale ends today I believe.

I just dont understand why they need to see anything other that an ID if anything. Even a dod number. All they need to know is if you are a vet.

It's a shame that it has come to this, but I can't say that I am surprised. Lot's of people pretend to be active military or veterans in order to either get the discounts/benefits or to garner false respect from people. I can't say that I blame you for being upset having to go to that length to show ID, #'s etc. But try not to blame the store, but rather lay the blame on those who forced the creation of this situation.

I dont blame the store, it is the company policy. And I dont really balk at showing some kind of id that shows Im a vet. Its asking for a social security number, or dod number. Stores dont even want that when you write them a check.

I was at lowes a few months ago and asked about the vets discount as well. Once again I proved that I am a vet, but that was not enough. It is a shame that these companies have found another way to trick people into giving them personal information. But even worse that their target is veterans. It will be a long time before I go to lowes again.

For Lowes you can go to their wed site and upload your DD214 to My Lowes card sytem, then you may for to certify in person first time in. Then they just scan your My Lowes card and the discount is automatic.

Home depot is a little more difficult. They want to see a military or VA id to sign you up, DD214 is not good enough. I am in the process of getting one of the new VA VIC cards. It has been a couple months and I called the other day and they said 4-6 months because of high demand that they were not ready for.

Neither Lowes or Home Depot will now except just seeing an Military or VA ID, they want you registered in their system.

Washington State will add Veteran to drivers license for free with DD214, I did it the other day. Not to sure how much good it is, however, except a LEO might ask what service you were in and say me to, have a nice day!!!!

Exactly, rather than "thanking"vets for their service they have found a way to trick us into giving them our personal information for marketing or other purposes.

You are not a target, companies have polices to follow. Employers always require personal info and you give that to their employees (can you trust them) you have to, or don't work there. If you sell to government agencies, they need your personal info (for 1099's) so you give it, or you don't sell to them. I think you are making it out to be worse than it is, relax

The VA has a new program to provide a (V)eteran (I)ndentification (C)ard for those that are NOT receiving medical services from the VA. In the past only those on disability and/or receiving medical were issued ID cards. This program has had a pretty rocky start with web site issues, delays etc.

It is the principal of the thing. I spent over 3 years in the marine corps that included 13 months in vietnam. Why should I have to give them my ss number after Ive proven beyond a doubt that Im a vet ?

Ask for the "behind the counter" wiper blades at O'Reilly. May be a commercial account holder only thing. Like $5.00 for a pair. The mark up on wiper blades is insane. Seriously - look at Rock Auto's price for wiper blades, add shipping, and you are still below the cost of one blade at a store.

Guys, I am a retired USAF Vet and work part-time at O'Reilly's to support my nasty drag racing habit. We are required to ask for the last 3 of your SSN or ID number and to have you show us. I totally get that this bothers some of you. I will not use the Vet discount at Lowes because MyLowes does track your purchases. O'Reilly's does not by asking for the last 3 of your SSN. I worked at Lowes part-time for five years. The O'Reilly's request for your last 3 is a way to insure the Vet is getting the discount and not some poser. I see it a couple times a week where somebody comes in and claim they or some relative is a Vet but show nothing. They ask for discounts claiming they are employees of local companies but have no affiliation of company. If you are signed up for O'Rewards, then your purchases are tracked. To avoid this, ask for the discount, show your card and pay cash. The guy behind the counter has no idea who you are! Not trying to stir the pot or defend any incompetent counter personnel. Also keep in mind when dealing with O'Reilly's; they will price match just about anyone so be prepared to state your case when you find a better deal elsewhere.

Tractorat: My license has a "V" indicator on it for Veteran and that doesn't fly. They need those three numbers to use the discount. Dave: The discount hangs around 10%. Funny thing with the O'Reilly's discount is it is not "across the board" if you will. I do not have any idea on the "algorythim" or whatever is used to determine the discount, but a two dollar item may net you no savings whereas a 300 dollar item will net you the 10%. Another thing with O'Reilly's, watch the items on sale. You are better off taking the sale price than pushing for the Vet discount. This happens often when they offer Oil and a filter discount when purchased together. The oil may be on sale but the filter is not. If you use your Vet discount, the oil reverts to full price along with the filter and then the Vet discount is applied. Watch the sale prices and ask the counter guy if your Vet discount will help or hurt you. We can run the sale both ways and tell you. By the way Tractorat, at least at our store, we will accept the VA card. There still is some kind of a numbered identifier on it we can use the last threee digits from. No DL required.

Mine say veteran, plain and simple. My VA hospital card says VA hospital or something like that. You cant get those unless you are a vet. The numbers they want dont show you are a vet. They do not need those. They are collecting information for what ever reason
