DPF / EGR questions

Mini Maxx discontinued

Hi. I recently bought a 95 Ram Cummins 2500 from a very unethical used car dealer. The guy lied about everything. I think the engine was swapped out and want to know how can I tell? I suspect it was changed because it takes a cartridge type fuel filter. I thought 95 had spin on fuel filters. Also is there a way to get the entire service history of the truck through Dodge? Thanks.

Welcome to the TDR. Yours is an interesting post. Its simple to put up pictures. Can you put some of different angles of the engine? There should be a data plate running up/ down at the drivers side front edge of the timing cover. Shoot that best you can. Use a medium res setting to avoid data issues.

There were no spin on fuel filters for your model year. Like Wayne said get the info off the front of the timing cover, that should tell the story.

What makes you think it was swapped out?

Ok. I found the plate and it looks like it is a 95. The date is 6-29-95. Thinking about it now, I should have taken a photo of the fuel filter housing. The housing has a bolt on top that looks like it will separate the bottom housing to access the filter element. Do you think someone changed the front plate to hide the fact that the engine was changed? I would not put it past the person I bought it from. Is there a number on the block to identify what year it is?

I apologize for any alarm, but it's not every day we get someone who pops in with a question like that. Nah, that rivet in the picture looks good. It should have an inline injection pump- looks like a little engine itself with all the steel lines coming out the top in a row going to the injectors. Do you have any experience with diesels? Just trying to gauge your experience to help better. On that plate there will be a CPL number. That's the arrangement of how the engine is setup, and what a Cummins dealer needs to get you parts. Also there's a couple guys here who can look up that number and tell the exact application of the engine.

Please provide the 17 digit VIN of the truck itself. I can go to Cummins and see the engine serial number that is recorded for your truck to make sure that the tag is a match.

If you would rather not post the VIN on here you can PM or e-mail it to me at

Thanks for all the help everyone. Well apparently I didn't look hard enough. The fuel filter looks like it has been painted black. It is a spin on filter. I don't have a ton of experience with diesels, but I an an auto mechanic by trade. I have had a rough experience with this truck so far. I found out this truck has over 4000,000 miles on it and am consistently repairing it. Is there a way to check it the KDP has been addressed without pulling the front cover? Thanks again for all your help.

Taylor in Lackawanna County? I am through that area at least a half dozen times a year or so. I've always wanted to stop in to see Steamtown and the Coal Mine tour but I never seem to have the time.

If you are ever out in this side of the state, we have a great group of guys that have been working on these trucks for the last 20 years or so out of my buddy's shop. Feel free to look us up if you are in the area.

Steamtown is awesome! I think theyve been hit hard by the sequester though.

Good luck fixing up the truck. Its a good one. Youll find lots of help here!

One way to tell if you have a 12 valve engine is the valve covers, there are six of them one for each cylinder. A 24 valve engine (which I doubt you have) has one valve cover. A 95 automatic would be 160 hp engine and a manual would be 175 hp. The 94 thru 96 have spin on filters ( you take the filter off and put a new one off. The 97 up have spin off canister where would spin off the canister and take out the filter element and drop a new one in. I think 2000 the canister was stationary you srewed the top off. That is how my freightliner is. It is a early 99 made in august of 98.

The ID plate on the side of engine should tell you what the hp and tq is for the engine.

94 to 95 12 valve auto trans 160 hp manual trans 175 hp.

96 to 98 12 valve are 180 hp autos and 215 hp Manuals.

Saw the 6-95 date you should have the p7100 pump long looks like a straight six engine.
