How long will it take to check the overflow valve

for the first time?

I've got a new one from Piers, just in case old

spring is bad.

Checking Overflow Valve

BGDUMMY,

Checking the overflow valve (measuring the length of the spring) is an easy job. Takes no more than an hour if you take your time. Stuff a rag under the valve when you take the fuel return line off to catch the seal washers if you drop them. The length of the spring is supposed to be . 500" - you can stretch it a little to restore the pressure it takes to open it, but if it is significantly shorter than 1/2", I would replace it.

Some guys have had to file the casting next to the valve to get it out (I didn't).

I agree with cumminsgetme that you don't need to change it if your fuel pressure is ok.

They usually go out every 60-80K... Replaced dozens of them on trucks with erratic or low fuel pressure. Spendy little buggers, somethin like 80 bucks from Cummins. Yikes!

It's a very easy job, about the only thing that can go wrong is losing the sealing washers. Half an hour if you take your time.

I got it for a B'Day present (wanted to have on hand, for those just in case things), but, got to thinking why not check the old one out. Maybe things have been going down hill slowly and I have not noticed it.

overflow valve

I am new to all of this, so bear with me. what does the overflow valve do and how will I know I need to change mine? (I currently have 82k on my truck)

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but it acts like a relief valve for the fuel pressure supply to your injection pump.

If it's worn, pressure (and performance) will be low.

Eric

so when I go to buy a new one, do I purchase a new valve? a new valve and spring? or do they come all as one unit? (like I said, I am new at this)

P7100 pump works best with steady(ier) fuel pressure in a desired range. The overflow valve controls the return from the P7100 with a mechanical pressure relief (spring behind a bearing) . Assembly located inside the spendy valve. On #3... 90k miles.

Finally did it this weekend.

Took about 30min. (did the file on casing

thing first a few strokes before attempting to remove)

Not a bad job at all. Took the old one apart just to

see if it was in need to be replaced and the spring measure

7/16". Don't know if that was enough to matter (stock should

be . 55 I think), but I put the new one in anyways.

Pier's

does this Pier's place have a website? and when you purchase one of these valves, does it come with a new spring or is that seperate? Do new sealing washers come with the new valve, or do I have to purchase those seperately?

Piers does have a website, I don't have the address handy. The valve is one replaceable piece, the sealing washers are separate but you can reuse the old ones if you don't lose them. Stuff a rag in-between the engine and injection pump to keep the washers from falling far. Best way to tell if your valve needs to be replaced is to check the fuel pressure, better yet install a permanent gauge in the cab. With the engine running and gauge connected if the pressure is low kink the return line, if the pressure climbs the problem is the overflow valve.
