My 6.7 2007 overheated today at a stop light. I was towing with the temps at normal, then my Edge alarm went of at 224 deg and before I could get out of traffic it made it to 240 when I shut it down. I sat for about 10 min and started it. It started to cool down slowly then we heard a dull click sound from under the hood and the stock temp gauge dropped in temp really quick and the temp worked fine for the rest of the 60 mile tow with a couple 3rd - 4th gear hills of 4-5 miles long.
I had the electric fan clutch replaced after we found it was not working. Now when it kicks it I can definitely hear it. I did notice that if the temp gets to 213 deg the fan clutch will engage, but it didn't seem to this time. I did notice the temps were getting up to 213 deg which it never use to do at all.
I have not looked for any codes as yet, but will tomorrow.

I read threw a code and it showed P0217 which is for engine coolant was to high.

Does anyone have a clue for me?

With the click, did you hear the fan drone start or just a click and it started cooling down. The fan clutch is engaged by the computer if I'm not mistaken. You probably heard it finally get the signal and engage. If I remember correctly, the ECM signal switches the ground so make sure all of your ground connections are clean and tight. Clean them all. I just worked on a friend's Jeep that was throwing transmission codes and not shifting. Turns out, it was the grounds for the tipm were corroded. Also check your connector for the fan clutch and make sure the pins are clean. It would be a good idea to use some dielectric grease on those pins. That connector used to be down low by the radiator and is subject to damage and water intrusion due to its location.

Stopped at a light the fan shouldn't be needed to keep from overheating, I would wager it's time for a new thermostat.

The fan will not be very loud at idle, and when you left I am willing to bet your focus on the coolant temp averted your attention enough to miss hearing it run.

There just simply isn't enough power that can be made in lower gears with a properly functioning thermostat to hit 240°.

The click I heard was from inside the cab. When we went to the engine we did feel that there was more hot air being moved by the fan that than when I first started it. My buddy was standing at the front fender. I have a new thermostat coming, sure can't hurt. I will clean all the electrical connections I can find also.
I will not be getting to the project till next weekend. Thanks for the info.

OK found the problem. I did get hot on a steep long hill and must of lost some coolant. and with that happening the fan sensor was not in the coolant, so it would not read correctly. I did NOT know that there was a air bleed off for the coolant and didn't realize that I had lost some coolant. The coolant tank still had coolant in it which threw me off.
I did change the thermostat and cleaned the grounds anyway. I had also replaced the electric fan clutch which is what caused to over heat situation in first place.
I'm a happy camper now because the wife is glad to have the truck ready for the next trip. Thanks for the ideas and help
