My owner's manual says 10 quarts oil, and the filter gets one.

Jiffy Lube says 12 to 14 quarts are required, and they know because they do this all the time.

????????????

Does overfilling with oil do any damage? How much over is OK, where is the danger zone?

The 24 valve cummins in our trucks take 11 quarts total. Gippy Lube is WRONG.

I know this topic was hashed over a little while back. Try a search on the topic. I'll see it I can come across it.

Jim,

If they put enuff in so that the rods hit the oil that is NOT a good situation! Actually, I would stay away from these quick change outfits with a Cummins. Their overpaid employees are likely to fill it with 5W30.

Your owners manual does not lie, Jiffy lube DOES. 10 quarts in the pan, 1 in the filter for a 24v. Jiffy lube is usually manned by a bunch of of people who are relitivley clueless. Or at least the one near me sure is. And what Jiffy Lube does oil changes in Turbo Rams "All the time"? are trucks are rare enough that i would think more than half the people who buy them are the "do it yourself" types who would change there own oil and not go to them?

Definitely 11 quarts. I know it's 1 quart short of a full case, cause I'm starting to build a collection of "spare" quarts of oil. If it were 12, there'd be no extras. #ad

FWIW: I do take my vehicles to the local Valvoline quickie change every once in a while when the weather is nasty. It's the only place around here that doesn't mind if you watch every move they make while they're working on the car -- so far, I've seen nothing alarming! They'll even use your oil and filter, cut you a discount, and not complain about it.

Ahhhhhh, but, my friendly Dodge dealer put 12 quarts in, and charged me for same till I wized up and started doing my own. He also torqued the drain plug to about 100 Ft / Lb. Neat Huh?

Same dealer that told me that heating up while towing with an automatic was due to core deposits n the Radiator with only 3,000 miles on the truck.

11 qts.

However, it is easy to see where some people may think that 12 qts is correct. The first time I changed the oil in my 98. 5, it took 12 qts to reach the full mark on the dipstick. Later I found out that the wrong dipsticks were used on some of the ISB's. The dealer replaced my dipstick under warranty.

I bet they're getting it mixed up with a PSD. Don't they take 14? Can't they at least HEAR the difference? I can't imagine not doing it myself. Too many chances for disaster when someone else is fiddling with your truck.

Back when my '93 was due for its first oil change and I was due for retirement, I got to thinking that having changed my own oil since I got my first car, I was old enough to let some "kid" do it. I went to a chain lube place, but they were real busy so I had about a 15 min wait; after about 10 min. of watching the vehicles ahead of me being taken care of, I pulled out of line, chased around town and bought oil and filter, went home and changed my own---and still am. The looks of the people working there gave me the feeling I did not want their hands on my truck.

Fireman Dave hit the nail on the head - PSD's hold 14 q's to keep those injectors pumped up and helps keep the oil from thinning out.

12 quarts in the pan hasn't hurt anything yet and it keeps the garage clean of those 1 quart leftovers.
