Got my Mag-Hytec diff cover installed Friday. It's a little bigger (think Jennifer!) than the stock, pressed sheetsteel pan. My big ol' spare tire was going to rub the surface of the cover, so they tossed (NOT! #ad
) it up in the bed, and I rassled around with it yesterday afternoon, trying to stow the tire in the stock location w/out it contacting the aluminum.

used a short piece of chain wrapped around the receiver hitch, and a ratchet-hoist (a cargo strap would probably do just as well) to drag the tire backwards while winching it up with the little windlass. yeilded about an inch or two of clearance between the diff and the tire. I'll probably get more creative with turnbuckles, and a net made of chain in the future. I don't really know (even after 16 months) how much to trust the winch to hold up such a heavy tire (120 lb), especially when the stress is not just vertical anymore... so far, it's tidy, and hasn't done anything to void my MH warranty.
Looks good under there, too #ad

Got the Amsoil 85-140 in it, so, I'm good til doomsday, I guess... got amsoil now from the flexplate back. the only place where not is the crankcase (Delo 400 every 3k) and the front diff (original grease from Dana in there, until MH does the upside-down dana 60 cover... not holding breath)----

rich , i hear ya on that little cable holding up the spare , saturday i drove over #ad
a fullsize pickup spare that someone dropped in the middle of the interstate while i was doing about 65mph , was looking for a landmark for the exit i needed and looked up for a moment taking my eyes off the road . thought i hit a mortar #ad
, i looked in the mirror and thought it was my spare bouncing across the road , damage to my ram was not real bad , bent my aluminum rim , blew out belt in the tire, and took out a shock , but i needed new shocks anyhow , and tires too #ad
. these morons at the factories need to come up with something better .

I presently have the Mag-Hytec deep trans. pan with a double deep pan on order. I should receive it this week if all goes well. #ad

Regarding the spare tire problem; I have a 285/75R16 spare tire and a Dana 70 Mag-Hytec diff. cover on my Ram (plus a Banks 4" dia. s/s exhaust system to work around). I fabricated a trick aluminum (and polyurethane) mounting plate with an offset mounting hole which I "bolted" to the spare. A little creative mods. to the OE winch assy. and I was in business. The polyurethane side of the adapter mounting plate faces the appearance side of my M/T Alcoa Challenger wheel, thereby protecting the polished finish. A Bestop spare tire cover protects the spare from damage and the Mopar/McGard spare tire lock as well as a NUKEPROOF cable lock keep it right where I need it... just in case. #ad
It's more time consuming to remove the spare now however, I don't really want my $350. tire/wheel combination growing feet during the night.

Mopar,
This is off subject but I here you on the road debris. My sister hit a big rig tire and rim at 55mph on an off ramp. It probably would have had the same effect as your encounter but she was not driving a dodge. Her volvo 850 took it a little harder than a pick up would.

Anybody tried the Mag-Hitech with 285 tires? Will cover clear tire? Any answer will help

My big'ol Ricksons are about 33" tall, overall, so, probably about 33. 5-34" when horizontal & hanging. When cranked up "stock-style", it rubs. When forced to stay a little ways aft,(see below) there's about 1-1/2" remaining, so that the only contact would be if the axle shifted significantly rearward, or if my anchor system failed, allowing the tire to swing forward.

BTW--my ratchet hoist held, but road vibrations had allowed the tire to shake loose, so it was swinging on the little winch cable, but limited in its forward motion by the anchor. #ad
This will not do!
After a trip to WalMart, and about a $25 expenditure on BOMB parts, I came up with a better motion limiting apparatus. Here's the list:

15ft of 3/32"coated wire rope (aka "aircraft cable) (there was a little left over) ($. 46/ft)
2 (actual use--bought 4 and didn't need'm all) threaded "quick links"--the kind that close with that really long nut (small)
4 ea. of the end-thimbles that allow wire rope to be looped at the end without kinking
2 small eye-to-hook turnbuckles.

The "hook" ends of the 2 turnbuckles serve as anchor points for the cables. I hooked them to the truck using the drip holes on the spring shackles' mounting brackets. NOT at a point that moves as the suspension flexes, I mean the big pieces that hang down from the frame at the aft end of each leafspring. The "loop" end of each turnbuckle has one of the quick-links, which, in turn attaches to 2 long (custom-length) pieces of cable (with those loop-making doo-hickeys in the ends).
One cable rests in a tread-groove, and makes a u-turn around the front of the tire, so that both turnbuckles can be tightened, and it wedges the tire backwards, away from the axle. The other piece of cable, (also looped) simply goes under the tire, from one quick-link to another, in order to provide a little more vertical support, taking some of the stress off that little winch cable. When removing or replacing the tire, simply loosen the turnbuckles enough to unhook them from their attachment points, winch the tire down/up, and then replace them. Tighten the winch, then the turnbuckle, winch again, turnbuckles again... now it seems to ride pretty solid... I'll post pix when I can... . rm
