Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P 1693...what does this mean

I was reading some old threads last night about codes and I saw how to do it so I went and checked it on my truck. It first said P1693, then P Done. I have heard this is a companion code, what do I need to get in order to pull out the rest of the codes?? A scanner?? If so, where do I get one and how much$$$?

If you go to AutoZone or somewhere similar they will do it for free.

It should come up and say P PCU, P1693, P Done, P ECU, P****(if any), P Done. You have to wait for both to finish to get thee other code. You are right P1693 just means the ECU has a code, but your key switch will give you both.
