Downsides are 1. ,initial cost

2. inability to ever pass an emissions test again,or even legally sell the vehicle,at least here in NY you couldnt even get past an inspection with a converted truck

3. Driveabilty, responsiveness and refinement, variable timing of the vp44 is biggest thing here IMO. the VP44 starts easy, idles clean every time, cold or hot,and it gives better power in most situations during daily driving.

4. Resale,

5. parasitic hp loss, the Vp is much easier to turn, and robs much less Hp than a p7100

6. tuneability, the VP44 with a comp box is very adjustable, the p7100 has 2 settings full fuel, and 1/2 fuel (valet) mode. nothing in between, the comp box can adjust low speed fuel as well as total power.

7. Power, unless you highly modify the p pump the vp44 can hold its own agaisnt them with good injectors. Full mod pumps can easily outperform a VP,but they are $$$$$$. I doubt a bolt on stock pump will outperform a Vp44

I think Doug(JetPiloit) would disagree, but I cannot speak for him. I think if you tune it correctly, it could be just as drivable as a VP44.

This I do a gree with, but are we talking about tapping the pump wire?

I would do the conversion in a heartbeat if I had the money. :)

Uh-oh..... don't look up, John, that's Doug dumping his holding tank full of blue water as he flies over your house! :D

I'm on both sides of the fence, I LOVE both the 12 & 24 valve, but feel that the 12 (and it's P7100 pump)is infinitely more fun to work on. John is right, the conversion brings up compromises you have to decide you can live with.

The adjustability of the VP44, of course, is it's biggest advantage. Mine has lasted 110,000 miles at high HP levels, and I wouldn't blink at replacing it with another VP44. Personal choice. That said, Doug's conversion is a work of art, and I wish him scads of big-time fun with it. :D Namely, I'd like to see him hit numbers that point those stacks at his tailgate.

Agades, electronic fuel injection is pretty simple, nothing to sweat about. I learned on a 1985 Camaro Z-28, and haven't looked back since. :D It's all replaceable components, and the on-board diagnostics can point you to which component is faulty.

Agades,

John brought up the downside of a p-pump conversion. One other aspect that could be considered a downside is you will have to tune the truck yourself. No just plugging in a box and having good fueling and timing.

Now for the upside..... Ask John about riding around in my truck :D We had a great time trying to find straight roads around his house to do some transmission tuning. Personally I love the setup but I also enjoy playing with my truck and trying to get as much HP as I can from it. The P7100 when built right can supply a much greater quantity of fuel than a VP44. Piers did my conversion and I would recommend giving him a call as he can answer any questions you may have.

Doug

Dougs truck is nothing short of amazing. Trying to find room to open it up around here wasnt easy. The truck was torque steering well into 2nd gear on #2 only(in 4wd )No one asked me about the upside of the p7100:D . OHHHH the smoke is incredible,as is the power and RPM ability. I only wish I had a chance to feel the power with the N20 on:D . If he could ever clear all that smoke, and burn all that extra fuel, the Hp would be insane,as if it isnt now on #2 only.

I think the key to a p-pump conversion is setup. I have gotten lots of seat time driving a friends 2001 with a p-pump that was setup by Diesel Dynamics. His truck makes over 100 more HP on the dyno than mine(98. 5 VP-44) and still is more drivable on the streets. It seems that the p-pump can get the power without the fire hose injectors. Doug, hope to see you at maple grove. Cant wait to check out the twins.

Piers is good people

Ive worked with them for a bout 2 months now trying to diagnose my stumble problem

they are the people I will go with if I do this conversion

someone mentioned emissions

well I cant pass emissions now with the injectors only

I dont think I will ever own a diesel that I can pass emissions

I like power way too much

how many hopped up 24 valves can pass emissions???

I drove many 12 valves before buying my first 24 valve and I still like the way the 12 valve runs much better

Theres none of this wondering when the truck is going to do the crappy flop

reliability is very important to me

computers of any kind have never proven to be reliable around me . even the one Im using now

Al at peirs gave me a price for the parts for the conversion and a 400 hp pump

If I do the labor and sell my two VP's and my pm3 and comp Im over 2/3rds way to paying for it already

heck , the money ive spent alone to get rid of the stumble could have paid for the conversion

so I dont even want to talk about waisting money

Intresting. :)

Let us know how it comes out if you decide to do this.

Agades, most hopped up 24Vs can be converted back to pass an emissions test in under an hr,just swap back stock injectors, and turn the comp off,or on 1x1. I know for a fact that dd2's wil easily pass an emissions test(opacity)if the comp is on 1x1,with an hy turbo.

that could very well be

but for some reason I just cant get this thing to run very good when using a comp or any fueling box for that matter

I think theres more to this ecm than people know or want to admit

bash that sentence all you want but I am really dealing with a problem here

all induced by electronics

Al mentioned something about plaining the head

if i do this conversion can I ever convert it back if I want to sell it for instance???
