My truck has PO148 code on, I can clear it and sometimes it will stay off and other times it will come back. Yesterday truck was sluggish and wouldn't go over 50 mph and smoked. After maybe 8 miles that cleared up and it ran fine for 400 miles. What can it be?

you need to fill out your sig. if the lift pump is in the tank i doubt that is the problem, intermittent p0148 problems can be hard to find without gauges, go to genosgarage.com and get a AM-4386 rail pressure gauge for $153.28 and a BF-LONG TAPPED banjo bolt for $7, next go to autozone and get a 2"gauge mount and duct tape the rp gauge to the steering wheel at autozone also get a oil pressure gauge installation kit with the copper line get a 1/8" needle valve from home depot and a 0-15 psi gauge from ww granger, mount the gauge down by the shiftier connect the banjo bolt to the cp3 the needle valve to the bolt and line and line to gauge, you will read about 7 psi for the lift pump the autometer rp gauge is not real accurate but close enough that we can see the problem you should see about 6,000 at idle and like 22,000 at times while driving, the ecm changes pressure under different load-rpm combinations but after a few hours you will get the idea, if the fca get's sticky (a lot of p0148 problems) it at times will peg the 30,000 lb rp gauge or drop it to a low value, when it pegs the gauge it will open the prv to relieve the pressure and cause the check sum error if the prv takes many hits it ruins the valve so after you fix the problem the code is still there because the valve is leaking. after buying two fca valves i found i could clean them with brake cleaner and shake it between my fingers to make sure it rattles. it is held on with three torque screws i think T25 if you are not careful you will round one of the heads off and make you very mad and say bad things it happens often enough that genos sends new screws with theirs, clean the screw head with a toothpick and brake cleaner and do not tilt the driver
