So the new crank seal is installed, but will have to do it again very soon since the one that finally made it in the cover might have gotten torn a bit and potentially fixed with permatex from the inside... darn teflon seals.

Anyways, crank seal does not leak anymore (for the moment) and now to chase the next leak. The oil pan has always had this mist type of leak around the bell housing side of it so I figure it's time to replace it. Question is, can the pan be pulled without major muscle work of supporting the motor and whatnot... aka is the front cross member in the way? I'm thinking the pan can be lowered enough to slide a new gasket in...

Anyone experienced?

It can be done but hard with the trans in with the trans out lift the engine about 6' to clear the front x member I have done it to replace main brgs and rod brgs.

I replaced my pan gasket a while back with the trans, clutch and clutch housing removed. I don't think I could have done it without that stuff removed. Raised the engine up enough to remove the pan completely, about 8" is how high I think I got my engine. I would suggest trying to get the pan completely removed to clean the gasket surface on the block as well as the pan cuz mine had over 150K on it and some of the original gasket material was pretty stuck to the surfaces. It was definately a weekend job. I wish someone made studs for our oil pan as that would make the gasket install a lot easier but it's not too bad with the bolts.

use some fine wire like bread ties or underground telephone wire and put it through the gasket and the holes on the pan in various places around the pan, install the bolts and before they are tightened remove all the wires holding the gasket in place, go back and tighten the pan bolts. sometimes i will put the bolts through the part that i am working on and wrap the wire around the bolt threads to hold it in place until i get the threads started, before tightening it up remove wire from bolt
