... . driveway's all messy

the short hose that connects the aluminum tubing to that canister-looking doohickey on the right (passenger) side of the engine block... does it have a name?

Dodge wants $96 for the part, (sight unseen, over phone  ) and service will want more...

gotta call a tow truck and have "tiny" piggybacked over there, too... . how frikkin' humiliatin' :(

My suggestion would be to unscrew the hose from the steel line (assuming it is made the same as the '97's). Take it to a place that makes up hydraulic hoses, like a John Deere dealer for instance. They should have the fittings necessary to make a new one. My guess it'll be less than $20.

The "doohickey" is the heat exchanger.

If you have a few wrenches, you can do it in your driveway. Mine came out easy. I think it took a 7/8" and 3/4" wrenches.

If you only remove the hose and not the steel line, you won't lose much, if any, oil.

great idea, bmoeller

... the big trick would be finding my _)&#$%&_@-ing wrenches in that rat-nest I call a garage

would be just my frikkin' luck to twist/kink one of the hard-lines and progressively remove/destroy my way all the way to the rear bumper... . I have that kind of luck you know... .

I half-suspected it to be a heat-exchanger... what a neat/simple design... . do they ever corrode and fail? :{

Call Diesel Dynamics there in Las Vegas. They can help you and who knows what bombing ideas you may see while there. :D

Might actually be a lot easier to replace that part of the line if you remove the whole line and put the new end on at the bench. Mine is leaking too but my line seems to have a small crack in the flarefiting where it connects to the hardline so just replacing the end won't work for me. Just picked up a new line yesterday and they sure are proud of that line based on the cost of it. .

Howdy, all!!!

I'm feeling muuuuuch better now...

did the BMoeller suggestion... .

rummaged around and found all my biggest end-wrenches

Luckily that included two 7/8", and I needed both for that one place where there's 2 hexnuts adjacent to each other

Arranged them like a big pair of scissors and squeezed them together with just my *awsome, fearful, megatorquing* fingergrip... the upper was almost that easy.

once that was off, then I was confident to do a re-install, so I went to Allhose, Inc, here in LV www.allhoseinc.com and Tiffany made me a pretty blue replacement for $18. 74 :)

Here, in case anyone ever sees this thread, at the right time, is the parts list. I guess crimpage is a freebie :)

Quantity was "1" for all three of these items:

1/2" Male JIC 37*-------$5. 88

Female JIC 37*/SAE 45*swivel straight------$7. 19

8" 13/32" SAE 100R5 blue cover------4. 40

the governor got his $1. 27 and the total was $18. 74

From there, I went to see Darrel at Diesel Specialists, and got some replacement Amsoil ATF... bought 5 qt, only needed approximately 2, so I have some left over for future use.

swang by the AutoZone for brake cleaner spray, Gunk and shop towels

total expenditure for a DONE!! job, about $76 (If you want to get picky, you could subtract the unused brake spray, the unused ATF and the unused shop towels, and call it, like $45-50)

Beats the crap outta $96 + a day's wait + a labor charge + a tow-bill... . I'm happy!

---on edit----

had a big air-bubble in the the transmission... DID use up all the fresh ATF that I bought, plus threw in one quart of Lucas's transmission stop leak  ..... took, like 10 minutes for that thick, gooey stuff to go down that narrow fill-tube... . maybe now that little annoying micro-drip at my temp-sender will close up.

---got carried away again... . sorry---

Well that hose still works, but in the meantime, a couple of years ago, the steel lines on the driver's side rubbed thru against the framerail, and in another place, as well. Also on 3rd transmission. Gonna transplant a G-56 and call it a day

Yes , I replaced the lines on my 96 47re with NAPA transmission hose, dose not have to be high pressure just computable with transmission fluid.
