Not sure I buy the "more air" argument. I think it is pretty simple - you're putting more power through the drivetrain, so it's complaining a little. But by all means, call the experts as suggested by the previous poster!

flotten, I am going to assume that you do not have gauges. The VA adds fuel and advances the timing, both of which help make more boost and sooner in the RPM range. The timing advance makes the engine sound a little different. You are making 16-18 PSI at 1500 instead of 12 tops without the VA in a hard pull. Higher boost makes the engine sound different and there is a lot of noise from the stock air box sucking all of the air it can get. Under the right conditions you will also hear the wastegate opening sooner in the pull. I would say that your noise is normal. I have never seen high EGT's with a VA, but you really should get some gauges. Even stock you really should get gauges so you know what is going on with your engine.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this so I hope I'm doing this correctly.
I have a 99 4x4 extended cab cummins with a 5 speed. I pull a 6000lb 5th wheel trailer and then behind that a heavy boat. The 2 trailers combined totals close to 10000 lbs. I wanted a bit more power for pulling this so I added a Van Aaken ISB Plug-n-Power performance chip.
The manufacturer claims an incredible 160 ftlbs
increase in tourque. I'm not sure if I'm getting that amount of increase but I can tell you that I'm very happy with the trucks performance now.
Since adding the new controller I do notice however that upon hard acceleration the truck is noisier that it was stock. (The noise could sort of be described as a loud growl) The place where I purchased the controller said that this may be attributed to the increase in air being taken in due to increased turbo boost.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Anyone else notice this type of noise?
Thanks for any help!

Flotten,

If you have a manual transmission, the noise you are hearing could be gear lash in 4th gear. 4th (in the 5 spd) is direct drive so a lot of the gears in there are just freewheelin' doing nothing. It usually only happens at low RPM, 1500-1800. All the BOMBed trucks do it. Don't worry, it's normal.

Thanks to everyone who replied. This helps a lot. Now I know what to consider, and yes I will be getting gauges for my truck.
