Is anyone using the Perma-cool remote auto transmission filter setup on there truck. I was thinking of adding one, but wanted some input from others that are using it.

perma cool

Dave, I looked at the permacool setup and then put it together my self. I went to napa to buy remote filter mount, used a fram PH8A oil filter, mounted on frame works good and also the filter disapates some of the heat from the transmission. The auto I used this on is my work van as I have a 6speed manual in the truck. I did note that the color of the transmission fluid did get better after the filter was put on.

Eric,

Does the NAPA mount have a port for a temp sensor? I have a Perma-Cool on the work bench waiting for the next filter change, but if the NAPA does, this maybe a better way to go for my other toys.

Perma cool filter

i have the perma cool filter in the hot line to the cooler. i mounted it in front of the driver's side wheel, just in front of the wheel well liner. have the temp gauge with it. works great. i'm using the Mobil one filters on it. as said, there may be a less expensive way to do the same thing. btw, highest temp i see on my gauge is <180 degrees.

Remote filter mounting

Do any of you have some pictures of the remote filter mounting on your trucks? I am working on a setup for mine, but have not decided on a location. The mount I am using is going to include a port for a temp sensor and a discharge port so the entire system can be drained for fluid changes. I am also planning on using a Fleetgaurd Stratapore filter. :)

mopardave, i'll post a pic of mine, but it may not help a lot. the pic isn't too good. besides, i doubt that you could mount a stratapore filter here, if you are going to use the same one as the oil filter on our trucks. it would hang down too far??

sorry about the quality of the pic. you can see the end of the steering sector to the left in the pic, and the left front tire and wheel well liner to the right in the picture. :(

photo

Redneckdr, thanks for the photo. That is one of the locations I am considering. I am a little concerned about mounting it on the outside of the frame rail. The filter I am going to use is different then our engine lube oil filter (shorter)

cbconway:

i got mine from jcwhitney. can't remember what i paid, and can't find it on their website. have to go to the catalog. seems like $60-70--with temp gauge, less without.

dave:

the way mine is mounted, it is above the rail. i don't do any "off roading, so think with a short filter on it, it's safe. been on for 5k miles without trouble.

redneckdr,

Is that a stainless steel line that I see going into your filter, and is your filter between the two coolers?

Chuck,

You can also get the Perma- Cool with the gage port from Campingworld for about the same price as J. C. Whitney.

Dave,

What is the part number for the shorter filter, and what is it used on.

Thanks to all,

Chris

ccb:

no, that isn't ss line. i apologize for the quality of the foto. i ran out last night and shot that foto in the pitch dark. had trouble getting it in the field, and moved the camera. it is in the line from the transmission/tc to the air transmission cooler. i used hydraulic hose with steel braid in it. i wondered if it would clamp down on the barbs, but no leaks so far.

Shorter filter

The Fleetguard part #'s for the shorter filters are LF3487 (Synthetic Media). LF3313 for the cellulose paper media. Both filters are about 5. 5inch’s long. There are two even shorter filters about 4 ¼ long both are cellulose paper media. Fleetguard LF689 and

Wix 51068. I am sure if you cross ref. these numbers you will find filters from other manufactures. All the filters fit Ford V8 5. 0L gas engines and will work anywhere a Fram PH8 does. Sorry, I wrenched for blue oval in another life don’t hold it against me

:p :p

Glad this has been discussed; have wanted to put one of the perma-cools on mine for a while. Two questions:

1. Isn't that fram PH8A what cummins says to stay away from on the engine? Silicone inside and can collaspe

2. Will this cut down on the pressure and volumn of fluid ??

I read this in one of the trailer mags - it has kept me from doing it so far. Plan to have some mods to transmission done in spring that will up the pressure some. But really do believe that extra filter would help with life of transmission---------

perma cool

The fram PH8A is just a cross I have been using napa silver 21515. The volume seems the same to me as well as the filter dissapates more heat. Eric

glasmiths:

yes, it will take a fram PH8A--however you have a choice of any filter which will exchange with the PH8A. you can use a short filter, also. i'm currently using a Mobil One, M1-301. i don't know about the pressure question. i sure hope i'm not jeopardizing anything.

i have a list of the interchangeable numbers if you need them for any reason. btw, found the receipt this AM..... $79. 99 from JCWhitney with temp gauge and one filter.

Trans filters

redneckdr

thanks for the info

I think that when i'm ready, i;m gonna find me "something" that will allow me to use the same fleetguard filter as on engine. I know for sure you couldn't get them mixed-up; but i'd just feel better using one filter for both; and can get it from Geno's. :)

It was a mistake

Well I installed the remote filter setup this weekend and I must say it was a mistake.

The installation of the remote filter mount and routing the lines was easy, I then topped off the fluid level and went for a short (2 mile) test drive. Everything seamed to be working ok, got back to the shop and checked the fluid level again and it was fine. Let the truck sit for the rest of the afternoon, that night the wife and I used the truck to go for some dinner. As we left the house the transmission shifted very soft, like a luxury car. This had me concerned weight away, but I proceed to my destination. About two blocks from my destination I decided to apply lots of power to see if the trans was going to shift soft on a hard acceleration. This made the transmission slip, not much but it was slipping. Today I removed the setup and the transmission worked perfectly. The external filter was too much of a restriction on the system.

AUX FILTER

mopardave, mine has been on for 5K miles now (10K on truck). i can't tell any difference in perfomance. transmission has had nice firm shifts from day one. if it made any difference, i wasn't aware. i'll watch closer tomorrow... ...
