A buddy of mine has the 17 inch wheels on his 1500, wait till you go shopping for new tires. They are over 250 each... yikes. Hopefully with more trucks using them they will come down a bit.

Steve's article

Great article, Steve, thanks! But tire sizes, rim withs, tire sizes, rim withs. . inhale, hold, release, inhale... ... ... ... ... .....

PS thanks for axle ratios

We're working on that - it wasn't in the press kit and I forgot to ask about it. I should have that info by early next week at the latest. BTW, I forgot to put this in the article too - they'll hit the showrooms in August to September.

Thank you very much for the report Steve! Very good job!

I thought that the engine would have the gears in the rear. In the pics they looked like they were in the front. What's up?

What kind of pump is the high pressure one?

What is the oil capacity? It sounds like it holds a bunch with the 15k change intervals.

What size are the ring gears in the axles? How many spider gears/pinion bearings do they have? The gm 14 bolt is the tuffest diff I have ever seen because it has three pinion bearings, and four spider gears. It would be cool if these American axles had those features and the 11. 5 inch ring gear of the dana 80.

Thanks again!

Excellant report Steve,

I won't be rushing down to the stealer mind you but the new model has some promising aspects. The upgraded weight, the 3. 77 gear ratio, brakes, etc. Of course there is the down side, the stubby 4 doors. That I could live with. About the biggest area for improvement IMHO is engine access. Hey DC, we want a tilt hood.

Why did they have to put on those goofy looking raised white letter tires? They may look ok on something like a Cuda, but not on a 1 ton truck. Makes the thing look like a 'hot wheels' or 'matchbox' toy. Too bad they aren;t going with a crew cab. Also looks like a pain to work on under the hood. Sure makes me appreciate my first gen... LOTS of room in there!

Wheel/Tire size

A neighbor of my dads has the new 1500. His came with 17" from the factory but he was able to talk the dealer out of a set of 20" that came custom ordered an a truck. That size would fill up the wheel cut outs rather nicely:D :D

OK, my biggest question is did they really rework the front end, did they redesign the trackbar option? That has been the biggest detractor on my truck, going through one every 20k miles. Also, is there anymore room in the back seat?

Anyone know if you can get BFG all-terrains for a 17" wheel?

Morph.

Morphious

I know that BFG makes a 35" tire on a 17" wheel and a 37" tires as well. hmm kinda big for the drag racing types:--) :D but thats what I would run the 37 er i mean

Chris

Chris - the gears are in the front, that is a Dodge only situation because of packaging - all of the other versions of the engine will have the gears in the rear. The high pressure pump is a Bosch CP3. 3 - that's in the article. Not sure on the oil capacity - but the oil pan didn't look any larger than the existing one. I should have more information on the axles next week once people get back in their offices and have access to the data - they didn't even have model #'s for me at the show.

Thanks Steve. I should have been clearer on the pump question. What TYPE of pump is it? I am just curious as to what kind of pump can continuously make 23,000 psi. Also curious as to weather or not the axles are beefy enough.

Hey Steve, besides tire size to calculate rev/mi and rpms, what is the lift height into the bed? Did they reduce the bed height on the 4x4 3500 so you don't have to put a 6 inch lift on your fifth wheel?

Working on that too Boldt - yet another thing I forgot to check. The question is already in - bed height, bed rail height, and TT hitch height.

I don't know about the type of pump Chris - you may be able to find information on it on the Bosch web site, it has been on the ISBe in Europe for a couple of years.

Dodge Blows it Again

I am sorry Benson if you think people are wining :{ about the Dodge's version of a "micro crew cab" The so called new Dodge Crew Cab is a joke, Try riding for a couple of hours with a 4 year old kicking the back of your seat and see if the extra 8 inches of my crew cab isn't worth it. I can carry 6 ADULT 200lb men with room to spare(Id say comfortably, but the 1st gen seats suck :) ) I have sat and watched Pford and Dachevy build crew cabs for years and RULE that market. Dodge lucked out by working with Cummins, and build the best drive train on the market, but Dodge keeps dropping the ball by not making a TRUE Crew Cab again. I got so pi$$ed I ended up building my own Dodge Crew Cab with a Cummins. Now I have a larger family, I want to buy or build a Dodge Extended Cab Crew Cab. I would love to have a 2nd or 3rd generation truck, but with the half hearted attempt by Dodge to build a new crew cab, I will be looking at a 2 gen, or adding and extended cab to my old truck.

There are no specs at all on the 48re yet. As a matter of fact it looks like it was a mistake by the ad agency that it was even mentioned in the press release! In the press release it looks like it's available now and when we asked about it they said there wasn't going to be one. Then we mentioned that it was in the press release and their eyes got really big. We were then able to drag out the info about it being released mid production year - but almost nothing else. They did say that mechanical parts would be beefed up but that's it. If I were to guess I'd bet the gear ratios will be the same as the 47re - but that's just a guess.
