Well, I was cleaning out in the garage tonight and got kinda bored. Was looking at the factory muffler laying in the driveway..... then looked over at the torch... . hummm... So, after a few more minutes... ... yep... . :-laf



The inlet is to the right and the outlet to the left. The exhaust must take two 180 deg turns to get through the muffler, some smaller amount likely flows through the perforations in the pipes. Note the two smaller pipes that connect the rear part to the front, and the resonator chamber in the rear.

No wonder the aftermarket mufflers flow better. I thought of tearing, cutting or torching my stock muff to see what it looked like inside but it went to the dumpster before I got a chance . I did look down my errr. . banks monster muff before it went on and you could just about drop a tennis ball from one end to the other. Makes me wonder how the aftermarket muff muffle anything!

Just took some measurements of the insides. The "intermediate" tubes are 2. 5" I. D. Yah, there's two of 'em, but that still seems small. The opening to the aft resonator chamber is 2. 75"

This is one reason that the third generation trucks are more quiet. We pay it on the fuel end though. Guess its hard to get the best of both worlds. As I remember on my old 1st. gener truck, I could also look right through the Banks muffler. This had to be a reason for less back pressure.

3rd generation trucks are more quiet out the tailpipe? I want some of what you're smoking. I can't believe how loud my stock truck is out the actual tailpipe. I like the sound, but it's certainly NOT quiet.

You are actually seeing the "best" of the stock diesel Pick Up truck mufflers! the Ford and Duramax are even tighter internally and have smaller louvers in the 2-2. 5 inch tubes. The turbo eats the vast majority of the sound produced by the engine, that's why adding a straight thru performance muffler is actually not much louder than the stock system. But BOYOH BOY does it flow better!



The performance replacement muffler that we sell is a great addittion as it has the same welded hangers as the stock muffler so installation is real easy, the only sound difference is when you have your foot in it, otherwise it's pretty much stock sounding with a slight increase in turbo whistle. They are built from 409 stainless so they "match" up with the stock pipe materials too!

it looks like the stock 94-02 mufflers would outflow the thirdgens, except for the more abrupt change in direction.



sean, are you happy with the mbrp muffler? i saw/heard a straight piped 3rd gen a year ago and it was horrible.

Well, the HPCR engine is just plain quieter and different sounding than any of the previous models. Nothing is gonna make it sound like a 12V My '93 is straight piped and it's WAY louder and has much more of a bite to the sound.



Then there's the nice little kitty under there... ... . I think they've been known to wander off from time to time... .



Oh, yah, and I do like the MBRP muffler. Looks good, easy install, sounds good, and should last a long time.

I really wish you hadn't posted those pics. Now I can see that the pounding and torching I did inside my factory muffler before I put it back on did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Thanks for makeing me feel worthless.

try to remove some of the baffles?

I dropped a bale spear through one end to make a big hole and then torched what I could reach on the other, cutting through the baffles. Now after looking at the cut-away, I can see that all I did was make openings into a "dead end". Maybe I opened it up some, but not enough to warrant the hour or so I spent on it. Once this torched, pounded, pieced together system rusts off, and it WILL, now that I've made a mess of it, I'm most likely gonna kill the cat and figure out a way to mount a Donaldson 51 incher in there. Hopefully that's a year or two away yet.

The 05 has a piece of 4" flex where the muff used to be. Geno's had'nt had theirs yet. A coworker just got his muffler elimination kit from Geno's it's a real nice set up. 4" prefab.



And yes I left the Cat on with no muffler, my old lady loves it. But then again it was her idea to get the manual!!!!!!. Good women

Thats and interesting look into the muff, I wonder if anyone has actually tested before and after back pressures when changing out a system.



Looks restrictive but a pressure gauge would tell how much.

JHardwick simply cut out all the innards of his muffler then put it back on. His truck sounds awesome from outside, and there is no detectable noise difference inside the cab.
