In theory Platinum could have a compound(s) added that helps desolve crystallized DEF in the injector and on the leading surface of the DOC, as long as they stayed in the tolerance of UREA required by the standard. If they had something like that, they would be advertising the hell out of "patent #" or "patent pending" as it gives them credibility. With no patent advertising, I have to agree that it is nothing more than a marketing gimmick.
I agree, stopping the DEF crystallization would be a great improvement. But, as you said, no patent pending or the like makes it any improvement unlikely.
I researched some more. Ammonia is the only synthetic ingredient in making urea, and it is used in making all urea, from the cheapest brands to the Platinum. Maybe Wallyworld should add "Platinum" to their label too.

DEF is DEF is DEF....
And now it's even cheaper!

I run a Napa store and when this platinum def came out i looked at all the spec sheets and didn't see much differences. So as much i can say is I started using the platinum def in November and seems to be burning through more then the blue. But it is cold here upstate NY and long idle times can't remember how much i was burning last year. Since it doesn't cost me as much to get I'm going to run it in till the end of the summer and get r&d with towing LQ horse trailer at 15k. But as of now i haven't see any difference

So when somebody comes out with DEF that'll be stable for 6 months when it's 120 degrees F outside, I'll be headed to the dealer to order a new truck. Until then, poo.
