I got my PML differential cover in the mail the other day and decided to install it this morning. The cover is a sand cast aluminum piece that adds an additional quart of capacity to the rear end, it also has a magnetic drain plug. I have wanted to try one of these covers because it is reasonably priced, adds capacity, allows easy draining in the future, and seals using all the factory bolts and the factory gasket, it might add additional cooling with the fins but that may be negligable. The install was easy just bolt on, I had been running Amsoil 2000 75/90 and there was almost no metal on the fill plug, the oil still looked pretty clean as well, it had 12K miles of use. I could not get it anymore from the place I had previously bought it so I used Mobil 1 75/90 this time. I put a couple of pictures in my reader rig of the cover showing it next to the stock cover and showing the fill and drain plugs. The manurfacturer's site is www.yourcovers.com they have pictures and prices.

The PN is 9511, it is listed as the GM 11. 5RG. In the description is says it fits some Dodge trucks. If you order one make sure you specify it is for a Dodge, the GM does not have the gear on the left side of the ring gear for speed sensing as such the cover for the Dodge is machined out a little more to clear it. By the way it was nice to meet you and your sons at the dyno day a couple weeks ago.

Temps

Bertram65,

Did you have a thermocouple in the stock truck?

Are you putting one in the new cover?

I was just curious how much of a temp difference the extra capacity and fins make.

I did not have a probe in the old cover and I decided not to put one in the new cover, I doubt there is much of a temp difference, maybe it would take longer to get up to temp, but I would guess it would be the same after running a while. I put the cover on for two reasons, it looks cool when you are behind the truck and it is super easy to change the oil now.

Bertram65,

Did you notice if there would be any interference with the spare tire? I had a Mag Hytec for a short time and I noticed it was VERY close to the tire and feared it would strike under full suspension articulation.

I can't say for sure but it looks like it will clear it without any problem under full compression. It is not much deeper than the stock cover, it only holds one more quart, so it does not go back very much further than the stock cover.

Too bad they treat the Dodges like "well OK, they may fit some Dodges". Doesn't Dodge sell about as many Cummins as Chevy does Izuzu's?

Yeah, that is true of almost all aftermarket stuff, Dodge has the lowest sales numbers of the big three so they go where the money is. When they say some Dodges I think they are just covering themselves as some '03 and '04 SO 2500s with automatics had the 10. 5" rear not the 11. 5"
