curiousity?

When you first turn the key on (not bumping the starter) you hear a pump run for a few seconds. If you bump the starter you also hear a pump run. In both cases is this the lift pump running?

Jason

mopars1 is right on the money that the pumps are not on restriction anymore-even up here in beautiful frigid Canada... . when mine took a dump 2 months ago or so (sorry, I'd have to look in the book in the truck to tell you for sure) they were released from restriction and in stock at the dealer... ... I phoned in the AM to line it up, drove in at 4:00 and out at 5:30 with the new pump on. Maybe helps that my brother is the parts manager :D... . I don't see the pressures you guys see though-14 psi at idle, 11-12 at cruise and around 8-9 at WFO. I'll be upgrading my setup here to keep up with the COMP and mondo injectors I plan to run in a few months-I'm gonna try the pusher and see if it'll keep up-if not it'll be a replacement pump of the flavor of the week mounted at the tank!

Hey Stephen PM me when you get a chance-want to talk some Alberta-type stuff with you!

All of you guys who have had bad lift pumps, did the pump still run just no pressure? Just noticed recently that my pump does not run for the 2 second period when the key is turned to the on position. Every once in awhile it will. And is it possible for the pump not to run with the key in the on position for the approximately 2 seconds, but once the starter is bumped it does run?

Jason

Jason, if you turn the key on and the lift pump runs for a second and then you turn the key off and then back on the pump does not run the second time or the third time, etc. Trying to check the operation of the pump like this is not the way to go. You have to have a portable gauge set up to register the fuel pressure or get a good setup with a permanent gauge, or in best case two gauges or one gauge with two sending units with a switch between them to see the pressure before the filter and after so you can keep an eye on the shape the filter is in. I run two gauges so I don't have to fool with the switch. Just some suggestions. It is a very good idea to track your fuel pressure so you know when or if you might be having a lift pump problem.

Mopars1... ... . When i first turn the key to on, the lift pump will not run. Every once in awhile it will. Right now I cannot afford to buy the guage setups the all you guys are running, then have to turn around and buy a lift pump. Was hoping I could deduce the problem this way. But it should run when the key is turned to on the first time, correct? So if I have good power and ground at the lift pump could i say i have a bad lift pump?

Jason

Jason, that is not a good test, as the lift pump is not always energized with the turn of the key. You only have the choice of having someone test the pressure of the pump when the engine is running or buy an inexpensive test gauge to check it yourself. There is no way to go by the sound of the pump running or whether it runs or not when you turn the key to the on position. Sorry, but there is no other way.

8 p.s.i?

8 p. s. i. minimum now huh? That sucks, my pump drops to 6 to 7 for the brief period of time I can hold the throttle WFO (I love that acronym). I was good under the old specs, I guess it's time to look into a pusher setup.

Just for clarification, WOT pressures are measured in neutral? Jeez, I'm not comfortable running it up against the governor unloaded.

pump pressure

had time to drop by the dealer yesterday, and talked to the diesel tech (decent guy, who is BOMB friendly). he said that the deal with the 8 PSI at WOT is not cast in stone yet, but he thought that they would eventually make it so. his impression is that they are only to replace the transfer pump when pressures are under 8 at WFO if there is aproblem with performance. he is going to get more info on it, and i'll check with him again. i suspect there is going to be a lot of confusion for awhile with this one. this may make a "run" on pumps, and cause a shortage of pumps again. 'course, i guess the number of owners with pressure gauges is a small percentage of the CTD owners--without a gauge, oblivion... ... ... .

WFO=

wide freakin' open-only replace freakin with a word that would make both the filters and the moderators upset! :D

J

Tommy,

WFO (got to keep the canadians happy;) ) is measured on the road. As was said in steve's first post with that spec it is 8psi at wot under a load.

Ted

Come on Ted-you know we Canucks are always happy! :D 'Cept in BC-they're kinda upset that you guys put tariffs on their trees... ... long as you don't put tariffs on my oil or natural gas I'll be smiling going down the road ;)... ...

Planning on crossing the border to Happy-Land for the dyno weekend in July? Just a hop, skip, and jump for ya-your money will go a long way and it should be a blast!

Yeah J I was planning on comming up for the get together but things have changed and I am moving. Won't be in the neighborhood any more. :( actually I should not use the frown as the move is good for me but I am bummed to not be out west for May madness and your gathering.
