Fuel Lift Pump Replacement...

Had my fuel lift pump replaced today under warranty. This was after calling three other "dealer's" to find out if they "knew" about the 8 psi minimum psi fuel pressure; let alone the 5 year/100,000 miles engine warranty.

Before:

:(

9. 5 psi Idle

5 psi Cruise

2. 5 psi WOT

After:

:p

16 psi Idle

13 psi Cruise

9 psi WOT

Truck has 73,924 miles.

Guess I'll need to install a permanent fuel pressure gauge.

I'm om my 4th lift pump in 110,000 miles and had the Injection pump (VP44) changed at 80,000 miles under warrenty. All lift pumps but one have been paid for by me.

I cant take anymore

What are we doing? This is obviously a problem for the engineer's. My 99 lost lift @ 60k and I do not see why we as a consumer should put up with it. If You dont like a certain politician you dont vote for him so why do I see the question does this happen to the 02's. Crappola man I'm calling the bank to come and get it. Are you guys so addicted to the word Dumbmier that you would go back for more? If you want to get their attention dont buy the product. This is just a beancounter saying let em complain its cheaper to make the dealer suffer. Im sorry guys Im not into the Bombing thing and just went on the premise that Cummins made a longivity motor. Im off the clifffff... ... ... .

Just get a FP gauge. I have only heard of a handfull of people that have had a bad VP44 and that is the expensive part of this equation. We don't even know for sure that a bad lift pump will ever cause a VP44 to fail? Now it does walk like a duck and quack like a duck but we don't know for sure it is a duck

Keyed..... 14

Idle... ... ... 12. 5-13

Cruise..... 10-11

WFO... ..... 7. 5-8

However, I do notice the gauge dips to 5-6 at cruise and might stay there for 5-8 sec. It also does it at idle, drops to 7-8. It doesnt happen very often, but it does happen.

My '99 24V never did run right; at 54K miles very slight vibration (low power in one cylinder) at light load then vibration began to increase at higher speeds; dealer said the lift pump spec'ed out @10psi (this was after Cummins dealer reported fuel blockage before fuel filter) and would not replace lift pump - so I bought lift pump from Cummins Dealer ($145) in order to not grenade fuel injection pump; truck ran better than it ever had; dealer will not pay up even though have extended warranty; will never buy a dodge vehicle again - back to chev/ford - now in "looking" mode (driving on washboard road today almost downed engine - a unplug & replug job - bad connector on bad vehicle) seemed to be the problem but may not have been. Took truck to Dodge dealer following day and they replaced lift pump after 2 days diagnostics. New lift pump from Cummins lasted from early May to late June!

dodge and cummins.......

aren't for everyone. 5 dodges so far for me. all 5 together don't even come close to the troubles i had with one Drof. drive what you like, and make it enjoyable... ... . i'll stay with my DC/Cummins combo.

FWIW, my transfer (lift) pump seems to be getting better. he he. i've made some minor changes to my FP gauge setup now twice, and each time i pick up 1 PSI--now 14 idling and 12 cruising and 8 at WFO--bone stock truck. :D (20,000 mi)

Mine did the samething. I wonder what caused that? My pump was dead. Dealer installed a new one a couple of months ago. the psi's after 2 months of driving has improved (2-3 psi at all levels). Changed fuel filter when lift pump was changed so that was not the difference? Strange!!! Glad I am not the only one that saw this change, at least it is going the right direction.

pump

i dunno, pit bull. i doubt the pump is getting better. first i moved the port back from the VP44 to the filter end of the hose. picked up 1 PSI. then, my dang hose "wept" enough fuel to leave a diesel smell in the truck constantly. never enough to see fuel, just stink. no leaks, just aparently permeated the hose. then a coupla days ago, i changed to a polyethylene tube inside a hydraulic hose for protection of the poly. picked up another PSI. oh well, as you say, at least it isn't going down.

first pump died at 22k, stealer replacement seems to be working well at 64k no idea what the pressures are, will start worrying about that after 100k. Kinda hope it grenades along with the vp44 at 99. 5

install pressure guage?

My 99 4WD QC with 112k is on second lift pump. 1st one was replaced under warranty. These threads convinced me to buy a 0-15 psi fuel guage and somewhere I read that in the 98. 5 and 99's You could just pull one of the plugs on top of fuel filter cannester and screw it in directly. Well I did that to the outer plug on top of cannister 1st and restarted with no reading so I changed to the inner plug on top and wasnt able to resart so removed guage and had to cycle the key about 20 times before it fired back up. Can anybody direct me as to what I might be doing wrong or right?

F****** liftpump is dead...

*******great, now my ****** lift pump is ******* dead. What a ****** ******* deal. I think this is ******* ********. Really sad. I am off to the ********* dealer on Monday.

UNH-HUHHhh! :( :p

SO, *we* love to knock the Ford guys over their "cackle" and other less serious problems...

AND, we literally SALIVATE at the opportunity to ridicule the poor engineering and construction of a GM aluminum-headed V8 diesel...

And here WE are with such an abysmal and KNOWN problem with lift pumps that we openly recommend installation of fuel pressure guages to continually monitor pump performance... Shucks guys, that's nearly as insane as being told by our doctor to walk around with a blood-pressure cuff dangling off our arms to constantly monitor the condition of our heart!

Yeah, sure, we have boost guages and oil pressure guages - and others we install for a variety of reasons - but NOT because we are fully EXPECTING, based on the experiences of others, the eventual (early!) failure of our turbo or engine oiling system - but because it's simply a good idea to have the ability to OCASSIONALLY monitor those systems!

IF there IS such a high percentage of lift pump failures as it would seem from this thread, doesn't it seem MORE proper that DC themselves provide an adequate fuel pressure guage with the REST of the panel guages - and perhaps even an easily accessed installation port, where a replacement pump can simply just be "plugged in" with minimal effort - sorta like filling the fuel tank - and dern near as OFTEN for some! :(

Gotta tell you DC engineers and bean counters, this REALLY SUCKS big time!

And REMEMBER all this guys, when next tempted to ridicule any of the other makers for the "junk" we'd like to think THEY are passing off to unsuspecting and poorly informed customers!;)

Are WE any better?

got mine replaced this week under warranty. . what a job to get them to understand it was bad.

before... 2-3psi WOT, 4psi@3Krpm, 8psi@idle.

After... 14. 5psi@idle, 10-11psi @WOT 12-13psi crusine.

I had to educate the dodge tech that was working on mine. 3 calls back to the Star hotline... and finally got it approved to be replaced. . I finally got the Dodge Tech to take it for a ride and beat on the truck and watch for WOT numbers... he saw 5psi. . , with that Star approved replacing the pump. Before that the Dodge Tech said he saw "bad" lift pumps cause the truck to not run well and blow lots of smoke from the tailpipe. . so he didnt believe me the pump was bad with low pressure.

Edit: 26K miles. . 36 months... I think it was bad 10K miles / 1year ago when I started with a burning smell from the driver's side of the engine. The smell only happened when really pushing the engine. Maybe the '44 was getting real hot from not being cooled cause of the tired LP?

Over a matter of 10 miles, I got to actually watch mine fail. The pressure started a little eratic, then it slowly started to drop. I have 2-3 psi at idle. 0 at cruise. I hooked up my test gauge to confirm my other gauge. It is toast.

RIP

HERE LIES

LIFT PUMP

14400 miles

What a shame to go so young:(

Installed a new Spa FP gauge yesterday ... . well pre Muncie I tested it and I was on the low side but ok..... somewhere between Muncie and yesterday it failed... nothing more than 1 LB at idle,,you know the rest. . note I've put on 7k miles in the past 3 weeks . . and ZERO difference in driveability or power. . go figure. .

the "loaner pump" that Brandon let Tom G use is now in my rig. . guess it's time to get off the fence and do my upgrades...

in-tank bottom feed to rear pump and filter set up. . Van Haisleys [sp?] had a great looking in-tank pick up at Muncie that I had never seen before. . going to use it along with the Summit "Aeromotive" wantabe all in -8 An lines. . [think I'll by two and have one in the box for a spare and do the wireing with quick disconnects for future roadside change outs. . and prewire the spare with quick disconnects also . . A ready to go package in the box. . ]. . the -8 AN lines will prep for the after O-Ring head and block so I can go ahead and power it up to the 500 or so level.

Now THAT is SAD - REALLY *SAD*!:(

We've all heard of the "book of the month club" - looks like all new Dodge/Cummins buyers should AUTOMATICALLY be made subscribers to DC's "lift pump of the month club" - and be sent a new pump monthly for installation on their trucks - as well as a couple of spares - in case the monthly replacement fails before the month is up and the latest one arrives... :p

CHANGE MY VOTE!

Just put a guage on it at 49,500 and got 12/8/0

fawhoops:rolleyes:

My registered vote is no problems 50K miles.

I went to check Mom's but she wasn't home.

No more WFO (WOT) for me until I get another lift pump. :{ Can't let the Phords catch me in this condition!

I'm going to call dealers until I find one that knows what I'm talking about--wish me luck:(
