Does anyone have any ideas or solutions to poor fuel mileage in a 2001. 5? My truck gets 13-14 mpg (combined hwy and city) on average. I had a 99 (DC repurchased it for steering wander) and it got around 17. 5-18. 5 with same conditions. Both trucks are identical (except 2001. 5 is the 235HP), same rearend 3. 54, auto, 2500 HD quadcab, even same tonneau... .

I have read most of the threads relating to this and alot of people are reflashing their ECM and/or PCM, but seems to mainly be members with previous years trucks not a 2001. 5.

Thanks,

Doug S.

Haven't done a 10,000 lb. load run... Heck haven't done any pulling with it. Problem is no load to pull. I didn't pull any loads with my 99 and it was much better on economy.

Any other ideas... Other than renting a trailer and loading it down with cement bocks #ad
.

Don't dismay, that is about what my truck is getting right now. You are using winter fuel in PA I assume?? My truck when it was new and un-modified got 14-16 on the first three or four tanks, then climed up to 18 then winter fuel showed up and boom down to 13 empty and 11 when I tow my snowmachines. I bet here is a month or two when the winter fuel goes away it will get better. It would also be wise to check those clamps on all the boost connections. Read the "stupidest member award... . " post and you will see why.

I have gas milage problems with my 98 24v Ram , although not quite that bad. The best I can get on the highway is around 16. 5 and sometimes hit 17. In the city it stays around 15 Mpg. I have 39000 miles, broke it in driving first 2000 miles brand new without trailer on a trip, picked up a trailer and towed 3,000 more miles, and have done reasonable amount since then.

That first 3k with a trailer I averaged around 10. 5 to 11 mpg all on the highway. I did get as high as 19 earlier on, then it dropped down to around 15 on highway after they did the recall pcm upgrade. After complaining, they re-programmed it, but I don't know what they put in, and it went to what it is now. I also doubt that in this part of Texas the fuel is "winterized", but don't know for sure. This milage has been the same for at least the last 12 months.

Is there any other solution without going to a aftermarket software which would void my warranty?

I just turned 10200 miles and just got done with a 7000lb tow trip that was 4000 miles.
Going to Texas I averaged 12. 3 miles and on the way back I averaged 14. 7. On the way back I ran the truck hard 75 to 80 all the way and charged up all the hills. Went for a drive yesterday at 75 and average 21. 2 without the load.

After the long tow it really helped.

I run Stanadyne fuel treatment in everytank, that alone is worth 1. 5 miles to the gallon.

One more thing Texaco Fuel is junk, run Chervon or 76, I noticed huge difference in power and mileage.

Be patient and your mileage will come to you.

I hope this helps and throw some weight at the truck and your mileage will happen.

Good luck all

jetpilot, a little off the subject... okay, way off the subject, but what do you fly? I fly jet trainers for the Air Force.

Just curious.

That is very close to the mileage I have gotten with three different 4x4 Ram's. Two wheel drives do a little better. My current truck averages less than 15 mpg combined city/highway, and I see 17 mpg on rare occasions.

I won't go so far as to call BS on people who claim to get great mileage, but if I were you I would take all claims with a grain of salt.

My 99 gets about 16. 5 around town with some highway mileage, and I have a very heavy foot lol. I towed 4600lb enclosed trailer 380 miles on saturday. Running at 75-80 the whole time i averaged 11. 4 which i won't complain about. Just my #a for you

Soler,

I am currently flying an A320 (Airbus)... . How are things in OK? I grew up there, my parents and family still live there. I assume you are instructing in the T-38. Keep the sunny side up.

I wish my fuel mileage was better also but I really can't complain. I drive with a light foot most of the time but I do use the right pedal when I feel like it. I avg between 18. 75 and 19. 25 in the summer and 16. 0 to 16. 5 in the winter. The miles driven are about 75% hwy and 25% in town.

I have a 2001. 5 Cummins with the 3. 5 rear end, quad cab, automatic. I bought the truck in November and now have about 4000 miles. I get between 14 and 16 mpg (according to the computer) in city driving. My best mileage on a trip was 20 mpg. All of this is driving without load (I'm still looking for the right "load" to buy). I'm hoping mileage might improve some in the summer and after it's well broken in.

Since I installed DD2's and a DTT Valvebody, with my 'EZ', I've gone over 300 miles in just 1/2 of tank. I usually only get 350 miles for 3/4 of a tank! This is not based on the overhead trip computer. +

First milage was around 15MPG. Last weekend the wife & I drove thru Death Valley. Running fast & hard on the grades Averaged 17. 3MPG Crossed thru 11K miles on the truck. Driving to work this past week suddenly now getting 20+ MPG consistantly. I first thought it was the fuel but I tried 76 and even the Texaco that I belived to be the root of the poor milage. Fueled with Texaco driving home this evening, 20+ still. I must ASSUME that the computer reset the "break-in" fuel curve or the engine is just now breaking in. Very strange. Wait for 10k! Go drag your buddy's race trailer... Rich

What do you think Marco?

Just adding a timing box (like EZ or DDTTM) will gain you +2 to +3 MPG. #ad

Since I've added DD'2's, my milage has increased, not just measured by the overhead computer, but also at the pump by at least 2 miles per gallon! #ad
I actually think it may be a lot more because I've been flooring my truck almost every stop to test my new injectors!
