There was a suggestion in another thread that there might be a port for installing a 727 A/T temperature guage instead of having to cut and adapt into the outgoing oil cooler line. I see 2 plugged off ports on the passenger side of my 727, one at the rear facing the rear of the truck, and one at the front pointing diagonally to the right front of the truck - would either of those be the ones for a temp sensor - and how accurate WOULD such a point be for sensor installation, compared to cutting the hot oil line leaving the transmission?

Gary,

I'm getting ready for this exercise too. The general consensus seems to be that the cooler line is the place to go for the most accurate temps. A fellow TDR member emailed me some really good tips on doing it. I can forward the info to you if you want. His is a '94, by the way.

Go with the hot line insatallation, it really is easy to do and cost about 40 bucks total. Give www.jannettyracing.com a call, they have all the parts and install instructions. All you need is a tubing cutter (Home Depot about $10) and an adjutable wrench. You can do it in your driveway lying on the ground. Well worth the 45 minutes it takes to do.

I don't know about the 727's, but on the newer 47re's you can use the middle of the three test ports on the passenger side of the transmission. This supposedly yeilds almost as accurate of results.

DAVE - I would very much appreciate it if you would forward the info, and thanks to others for the helpful info - any additional info will help greatly in coming up with the best method.

I have seen on many 47RE's that the temp sensor is too deep to fit in the pressure ports. Solution is to do one of two things:

--Pull in the pan and install a weld bushing in the pan. This is a great way to do it because you are getting the temperature of the oil the transmission is using. That is, the temp of the oil it is pumping for lubrication, etc.

--Install it in the hot line going to the coolers. This is good because you see how hot the oil is getting.

Best of both worlds is to do both, and install a switch for going between the two. This way you can see how effective your coolers are.

YEAH, the "do both" is a good idea! #ad

The best way to go is with the '95 "hot" cooler line with the integral temp. sensor port. DTT installed mine when I had my transmission upgraded in January. Prior to that I had the sensor installed in my Mag-Hytec transmission pan.

Unless you are going to install two trans. temp. sensors ("hot" cooler line/trans. pan), you are best served by installing it in the "hot" cooler line.

You might want to reconsider putting your sending unit in the trans pan... It's not the hottest fluid coming out of the trans... If you install the DC line # 5011244AA, it has the port already in it, easy install, and no leaks... Don't forget to knock out the drainback fitting out... You already have one...
Hope this made sense #ad

UMMmmm - that is the second reference I've seen about "switching lines" (BOTH from owners of LATER model trucks), which sounds GREAT - but as listed in my sig, *I* have an EARLY '91 truck, plain 'ol 727 transmission - do those LATER transmission lines FIT an older truck like mine? I'd sure hate to send for one, and then have to use it for a lawn sprinkler... #ad
