Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) power a little lazy just of idle

I have noticed a little lazyness in response just off of idle. It starts good and runs good, but when i am just getting on the throttle it seems a little down on power. There is no codes that I can see. The other day I turned around on a street and when I rolled on the throttle I got some black smoke, not much but I don't normaly get any smoke. I think in that instant just off idle I do have a slight hesitation. My milage is 19 20 average, power seems normal above idle. I have my fuel psi gage unhooked for a short time(getting a new one) the symptoms where there before I unhooked the fuel gage line. anyone have any idea's thanks
