I originally bought a VanAaken CPC (VA) for my 99, but found that it smoked a bit too much for my liking. After reading many posts here, I decided a product from Edge would be a better choice for the smoke problem so I traded my VA (a week old) for a Power Edge last night and had it installed. I noticed that the smoking problem dissapeared and with the boost elbow installed, the turbo sounds quite a bit different then it used to. On the way home I selected power level 3 and floored it... . the thing just scoots! But, now the clutch is slipping. I backed it off to Level 2 and hooked my trailer up for a drive around town. Same thing - when I get on it, the clutch slips... . I called Edge, and they suggested I swap it for an EZ. I'm curious of what this is doing to engine??? 30+ psi boost versus 20psi is quite a bit! Also, should I swap the Power Edge for an EZ??? I'm kinda fond of my clutch and dont really want to change it anytime soon. I'm running it at level 1 now and the clutch seems to be holding.

If you are married to your OEM clutch, drop back to an EZ. I am running an EZ and Stage 1 injectors with a stock clutch and no slipping. And, I work my truck... ... ... ... .

I'm not married to it - but at 42K miles, I'm in no hurry to replace it. It will get replaced with a South Bend unit or maybe a Centerforce or McLeoud (sp?).

Keep the PE and get the clutch you know you need.

The 30+# boost is necessary to keep the egt's in check. I believe level one is about equal to the EZ, so if you leave it there you can wait till you are ready for the clutch and have the power there instead of having to buy another box later.

I would have to agree with Shooter, my clutch was gone the first time I pulled a load with the EZ. Keep the bigger box and call SouthBend.

What.. stock clutch slipping???

I posted a question earlier about the EZ box and stock clutch, and everyone said that the stock clutch held it.

I have a hard time believing just an EZ and Stage 1 injectors would be enough to slip the clutch.....

What gives?

Shawn... I can not comment on the EZ, but I can tell you with 275s and my Blue Box, my stock clutch was slipping.

The DD1s have a bit more power than the 275s, but the EZ is less than the BB... so it may be rather a close call.

Been there Done That!!!

Keep the PE Comp, Now that you have tasted some of what Torque and Zippy performance that is available you will kick yourself to go with less. The PE comp on level 1 is the same as the PE-EZ . The stock clutch is not enough for anything more than the smallest Power increase.

Any one who says they have a PE - EZ and stage 1 or 275RV injectors with the 6sp Clutch and says it holds will change their story within a few weeks or the first time they have a load in the box or a trailer behind.

One big advantage to the PE-Comp box is you can change the settings in the cab and "on the fly". I run empty half of the time and Setting #5 is where it stays. Some times if I am in a "sensitive area" I will change it to #4 where I keep the Fueling map at it lowest. That way it still Cranks out the Torque when I step on it but if I drive "normal" the smoke is very manageable even with the Latest Diesel Dynamics stage 3's (for the 2001 ETH).

Then When I hook up to a trailer I switch the box down in settings untill I don't have to watch my EGT's as close and it lightens up the stress on the drive train. If I am at max GCVW (21,500 lbs) and pulling a hill it is great being able to even go down to level "0" which is OFF. Then I am only running Bombed injectors with the Boost module part still working. With the PE EZ you have to disconnect it under the Hood to turn it off.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

1. set box to level #1

2. Click here www.southbendclutch.com Then call or "E" Peter... . Great Customer Service!

3. start saving a few dollars

4. Order clutch

Then start saving for Injectors, Tires, Extra O'S**T Handle for the wife  ... ... ... . ETC, ETC ETC :D

Shawn,

Maybe I can help on your concern about the earlier information that you received.

Looking at the years of the trucks you have a 99 and they are speaking of the 2001. The clutches in the two are different. I believe that the 99 through 2000. 5 6sp have a little more toque capacity. The plate load is greater even though it is a 12 1/4" compared to a 13". The range of mods that can be done seem to be greater with the stock clutch in the earlier 6sp verses the later 6sp.

I hope this helps!!

Re: Been there Done That!!!

Peter,

I have not seen the 2001 clutch, but isn't it a larger diameter than the 5 speed? Is it just that the pressure plate is not as strong, or does it use different friction material? I guess what I am asking is if the Pressure plate were beefed up using the stock disk, about how much torque would it hold?

Hmmmm...

OK that explains more. . thanks.

Well, I just got the EZ box installed this morning.

I did the boost elbow also included.

Since I already have the 275 injectors, this addition is SMOKIN!!!!!

I was not quite expecting THAT much diffference... . wheweeeee!

Now, though I do have a '99 stock clutch, I have to admit this power is gonna push the limit of the stock clutch. I am particularly concerned about how it will do with the 8800 lb trailer in tow... we'll see I guess.

One more question... is there any noise made when the clutch slips, or do the RPM's just go up without speed? Any other symptoms of when a clutch is slipping?

Shawn

Don,

To answer your question, if the pressure plate were beefed, it would help but not fix the problem. It is a great setup for a stock truck but when the mods are put into effect a tweaked pressure plate still will not do the trick. The OEM disc linings are not capable of holding more torque even with a heavier pressure plate. That is why we do both, tweak the pressure plate and change the disc linings to a much higher quality of material. Even though it is a 13" it does not have the clamping power of the 12 1/4" if you can believe that!!!

Shawn,

there will be no noise except for engine racing loud. all that will happen is like you said the RPM will go up but the truck will not go faster:(

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for the info. With only 600 miles on mine I will take it easy till it starts to slip and go with one of your setups. BP sure likes them !:D

In the spirit of the original thread....

Well, I guess we got a bit sidetracked on clutches, but as to the original question:

The EZ box is a winner in my books.

With the 275 injectors this HAULS A$$ !!!

The EZ literally takes moments to install, even faster when you have done it once and know exactly where the connectors are.

Shawn

Peter,

It's been a terrible 14months of clutch slippage since the Hot PE was installed. I have babied this clutch and usually keep it in Level 1 (80hp), but am finding that I can no longer utilize Level 2 (100hp) when passing or fooling around and of course Level 3 (130hp) is outa the question.

I will be getting the DDIII injectors and maybe the HX40 turbo. I will have to replace the clutch first.

I would appreciate it if you could E-Mail me info on the right clutch for my potential setup and prices. I will have to get one pretty soon.

It's a '99 24v w/5-speed.

Thanks in advance

I have the EZ and i do not have any problem with it slipping. maybe the 5 speed is better at holding the upgrades? i have had mine in there for many months now,i have towed with it and have never slipped it.

To WOWZY....

WOWZY, what year is your truck... 2001?

How did your clutch start slipping? While running it on level 3?

Do you have injectors also?

Shawn

Wowzy,

Please post your findings on this if you can. Also, since I live close to you (Durham, NC) can you let me know who replaces your clutch, how much the r&r ends up costing, and if you are satisfied with their work.

Since I've gotten the Edge Comp, I'm probably going to need one. No slipping yet, but I stay on #1 and #2 settings, though I'm sure the #2 gives it a good workout. No slipping yet but surely on the "Edge". EGT's are the limiting factor right now... but I'm working on that!

If you're ever down Durham way, look me up. My numbers are listed in the TDR Travel Companion.

I must have gotten lucky. I have the EZ and Bully Dog Step II injectors and dynoed at 310 hp. I routinely load the truck to about 17k and hammer it up the hills and the clutch has NEVER slipped at all. Been in this configuration for at least 6 months.

But, I have been 'told' that much more power will break the checkbook (spelled clutch).
